Boxrec and the wider picture

We all know theres many a silent eye kept on these boards from all over the domestic scene , but im now finding people in the pro game are beginning to take exception to some of the things ive written and have been singled out for it a few times now , not that i feel ive ever been particularly offensive in my view , i think people have taken things out of context at times , phones calls to change what ive written about a fighter , or promotors not liking when ive said something about one of their fighters or their shows .

all a bit stupid and petty to be honest and cant see why ive been particularly singled out .

Anyway ive now decided ive got to tone down what i write or not post on a subject at all if it may offend any particular individual .

Its a joke , people who know will read this , and i seriously think if you cant handle criticism etc then dont visit forums , id like to think i will be constructive in any criticism i ever get when i take out my license , i certainly wont be threatening to send the boys round .

Have many other posters been in this situation ?

in fact if so they probably wont post  .

I dont want to make any enemies in this sport , just friends .

so take this as my final rant , future posts will be of a reserved nature , id say i wasnt posting again if i thought id actually stick to it .

It is a shame that we don't have complete free speech here but unfortunately this is the 'real world' and we do not have free speech in the real world.
Most of the time it is not a problem but for this site to continue the owners have to be very careful about legal actions.

Too many people I think hide behind that shoddy 'these people aren't involved/fighters themselves so they cannot possibly comment', forgetting that these people who are not involved are the ones paying for the shows, directly or indirectly, be it via subscription, ticket sales, or buying the things advertised on the shows. Boxing is one of the few places where the customer can be called ignorant on a daily basis and as a collective group, accepts it.

And that other response 'they should try putting on shows' yeah because its so cheap and uncomplicated to start from scratch. But when its your business to do something, people are entitled to ask questions of the end result. I can't tell people who ask me a question about my work 'why dont you go and fit a bathroom then?' because thats not how it works. Again, only in boxing.

Damien, as far as i can recall, you've never said anything I'd call offensive or malicious. criticism should be met with explanation or contradiction, not confrontation and libel, IMO. But some people havent got it in them to do that. Not your fault. If these people had any sense they would act on here in a sensible way, but they dont want to communicate they just want to broadcast, for us to sit down shut up and watch Prospect vs TBA, or the Bobby Gunns of the world get fed to pampered 'champions'

Damien, I think your passionate rather than offensive, and you are an honest poster. Shame if that changed because someone is upset you aren't swinging off their nuts. You bring a lot to the table and some of us look forward to seeing how you get on in the pro game. You'd better get used to the whinging though, and be prepared to ignore it in most cases.

The problem is that a lot of the guys you talk about don't want to hear the truth and certainly don't want critiscism. They want to offer up poor quality in return for top dollar and if someone has the temerity to argue against that, they don't like it. Unfortunately in the world we currently live in, litigation instead of debate and change are what these people use to silence people and keep the status quo rolling on, short changing fans and making a fortune for themselves.

i dont know about the first poster but boxrec forums are a troll haven for a lot of cowardly racist idiots. and the mods couldnt give a toss. and i dont care about the usual freedom of speech bullsh*T that they always peddle.

I don't get the sense that Damian has been threatened with court action - but his reference to 'sending the boys round' is very worrying indeed.

I remember having an interesting discussion with another poster by PM once. The conclusion was I thought the forum was an extension of the real world - be careful about writing things that you wouldn't be prepared to say to someone's face or at least stand by (this is when other posters know who you are, that is). The other person's view was you could say what you like - this place was totally divorced from reality and had no bearing on real life.

It's an interesting one. As you can imagine, I've had plenty of contact with people wanting me to change what has been written. Always, always happy to correct inaccuracies...but not necessarily opinions if I think they're merited. As I told one promoter recently, 'If I took down from the news site or the forum everything I was asked to, there would be f**k all left.'

Keep expressing your opinions, Damian, if you're prepared to stand by them - and as long as you're not defaming anyone.

The last bit just isn't true - in my experience anyway.

As I've said before, unless you're a Mod, you have absolutely no idea how much graft they put in. There's a whole forum for them to discuss issues and they argue the toss over different things and come to a consensus between them.

Use the little red exclamation mark sign on the bottom right of the post in question, mods cant read everything as soon as its posted.

In honesty that was a while ago but was still all connected to the current issues , never actually bothered me as such but what has bothered me is that i want working relationships with people and although i realise its not possible to have everybody liking you its a bit annoying that certain people in the pro side have an opinion about me before i actually get to that point myself , but the first original point was that i shouldnt say something that makes someone look bad and if i continued to then id be getting a visit from them and the lads :witzend: although to be fair to that particular guy he now appears to see the funny side and when hes not fuming he does seem a good guy in general

I know full well that the real issue is due to certain peoples relationships with a rival white collar promotor who will have bad mouthed me to start with , at least thats what i would think but ill not name anyone simple because i personally would prefer to have allies rather than enemies .

My name is obviously becoming known for them to actually single out me as on the particular threads ive apparantly caused offence i was certainly not in the minority .

The most dissapointing thing is that i was informed that im apparantly a bit of a w***er for the things i write on here , i can take a bit of name calling , and hopefully people would do as i would which is to put aside personal opinions when it comes to mutual beneficial times in the future , but i get the feeling it would be more a case of them cutting their nose off to spite me instead of getting the benefit themselves .

Fully aware of the type of people involved in boxing sometimes , as boxrec posters we no doubt pretty much all know that , but doesnt prevent the sense of dissapointment when it rears its ugly head .

The funny thing is im kind of expecting this very thread to cause me some headaches too as people will read it, but once this thread is done with ill reserve my opinions a bit more .

As said ill not name anyone , just wanted to express my frustration somewhere :TU:

Edit : ive just searched for the thread im told was causing the offence and if anyone finds it offensive then they are far too touchy , ive wrote nothing wrong at all in that one , must be the right one as i was told about it by someone who doesnt come onto boxrec .

Id post it to show my point but would give the game away about who got pissed off .

Ive had quite a few, if not "threats" then "very stronly worded PM's" over the last decade or so, which i was kind of suprised about.

The funny thing is, this only ever happened when i posted something that i knew was 100% fact.

Make up a story about David Starie getting AIDS from a rent boy and nobody gives a toss.

Say you saw Jamie Moore having a Chicken burger in McDonalds one and good god, watch the carnage.

Unless you're being ironic and I've missed it, Stefy Bull is a pro/ex-pro. Was at his fight with Amir Khan on the Calzaghe Vs Manfredo bill at the Millenium Stadium a few years ago. He got a pasting in this fight but at domestic level he was pretty good.

I think that's a little unfair on the moderators, mate. It's the internet, you will get people spouting shit. If they weeded out every little thing that might cause somebody somewhere offence, they'd never get anything done. If the internet is policed too hard, it will lose many of the things that make it great. Chill out.

in the past we've had forum topics such as 'would you do an asian girl'? to name just one example

moderators could certainly delete threads that clearly invite racist arseholes to comment.
