Are you sure? That seems rather weird

We have him listed as 'Phantom' and 'Darren' on our database (which could well be wrong). We will need to edit this if you can get it confirmed.

I asked the author if he double checked with the boxer for both of these spellings. He said he did and he even mentions this in the intro with regards to his first name.

Also he spelled his nickname 'Fantom' to make him stand out, you can see it on his waistband in a few fights (e.g. rematch with Del Bryan). Hope this helps.

I enjoyed that Will look out for the next interviews. Daren comes across very thoughtful and intelligent. I can remember him boxing and he was a scary man, a very hard hitter. He seemed to have natural power. I had wondered how he was getting on; pleased he's ok.

Great interview, good to see someone catching up on what he's been up to, looking forward to the rest ( and yes the hammer incident ) he was a frightening puncher and looked like he might be headed for big things.......

Anyone recognise his opponent on the right here ? Very familiar face around british boxing these days...

Gillingham's finest?

Great piece, Martin. I remember watching Dyer as a young kid and was led to believe he was going places. His struggle with Del Bryan in one of his early fights suggested otherwise though. Without checking the stats, I can't remember if Dyer lost.

Ben, he lost in only his 2nd to Bryan on points, think I saw it on the BBC. They later put him in with ex world title challenger Jorge Maysonet, who was chinny but a very dangerous puncher - it was a big mistake as that pretty much finished off DD as a prospect

Maybe he'd have made it to a world title shot, and lost, with ultra cautious FW style matchmaking ( lets not even mention the wbo ) but he'd have come unstuck pretty soon after I think, either to a crafty boxer or another big hitter. Looking forward to part 2 and 3,,

Daren was dangerous to the last. Some of the lads he stopped in the amateurs were very capable. He was a bit wild to win a world title but if Nigel Benn could adapt his style and do so well maybe Dyer could have. It's a shame there's no massive hitter in Briain today, with Dyer and Benn (and Paul Ryan) there was always the possibility of something spectacular happening.

(I'd like to know more about the hammer thing to; love a bit of 20 year old gossip!)

Hi there, Martin here who did the interview with DD. It was one of the first things I asked him! On his birth certificate it is Daren with 1 'r' but he said only the BBC use to get it right as he told Harry Carpenter.

Another amateur star, a devastating puncher who seemed destined for much more

Seemed a decent fighter alright- watched a few clips of him....
