Hope I'm not making myself look silly here but does anyone know when and where the word 'Boxing' came from?

Apparently it might have come from the Dutch word "boken", meaning to shunt or push into position, in the fourteenth century.

On the other hand, the word "box", meaning a four sided container, comes from the Latin "buxus" which in turn comes from the Greek "puxos". Maybe if early fighters fought in a squared off area (maybe with sides?) then I can imagine them being called "boxers" because they fought in a box.

I hardly finished any education but i've never heard of the word "boken" either, my knowledge of 14th-century dutch might be somewhat....rusty

"Beuken" maybe, but that's a bit far from boxing
