Anyone watch the fights? Thoughts?

Little Paul Butler looked sharp and classy. He was against a can but it didn't stop Butler from impressing. Great head movement, counter-punching and even work on the front foot. Would love to see him against Sexton as being mooted - think he'd easily outbox him.

Thought Terry Flannigan looked okay in his title fight. His opponent was very limited but game, still though, expected Flannigan to look a little better. He is only 23 so can improve but am not sure he'll get past British level - no shame in that, mind you.

Thought Joey Selkirk showed his class in spells. He did seem to tire but considering his inactivity it was to be expected, plus, the eight rounds will have done him the world of good. Also, had the result wider; yes, Ball kept coming forward and landed a couple of shots, but Selkirk was landing the cleaner, harder shots throughout the fight, even when he slowed down.

Rocky Fielding looked good. Someone nailed it when they said he had great balance. Could see it going backwards under pressure when at times I was expecting him to trip or fall, he simply threw sharp counters and kept his poise. Quality fanbase for Rocky too.

Callum Johnson looked decent. Too eager at first to get his man out but took his time in the end and the hard shots he was landing took their toll. That Tucker was in for a scrap so fair play to him.

I switched off at the Coyle fight.

I think its time Fielding stepped up a little bit,i see on one of the V.I.P posts on here that Rockys team turned down a fight with fellow unbeaten Luke Blackledge?dont know if true or not...
Is Rocky happy fighting journeymen? id like to see him in a rematch with Tobias Webb, who was shatterd by the time the final came in PF...

I think Selkirk is one of those fighters who will get alot better when the quality of opponent goes up. He needs to get a joint promotion deal with someone like Steve Wood so he can get alot more active cos at the moment that is his major problem.

Flannigan looked a good, tidy little operator but he is one hell of a tough divison at the moment so they need to be careful with him.

Johnson looked ok however he is wide open to a right over the top due to the way he carries his jab very low, he got clipped with it a few times.

It seems like he is just at the moment. As long as he's happy learning the trade with these fights then I don't think it's too much of a problem.

With regards to Blackledge, wouldn't beating him lead to some sort of title shot? Rocky's team must not want to rush him.

To be honest i thought i followed the UK scene quite closely, but Blackledge must have slipped under my radar as i didnt know who he was...

Keep an eye out for Blackledge. He looks like a rough and tough operator who doesnt mind taking a tough fight or fighting away from home as it were. Bit of an indifferent past but could go British level maybe beyond if he continues to improve. He has appeared on allegedly a few times on co-promotions with Steve Wood.

Selkirk has fast hands and good skills, but gets hit far too easy for me, maybe if he goes up in class he will tighten up a bit, did not seem as powerful has people make out either, he it Ball flush many times but could not stop him, would be an interesting match up if he fought Jamie Cox as mentioned by the allegedly team, that's if he can do 11 stone, which I doubt, he was over 11st 4lbs against Ball and he did not look like he had very much he could get off, also he got tired, which could mean he was tight at the weight, still Jamie Cox would be a very dangerous fight for him, if Jamie's hands have healed.

Politely disagree. Selkirk only got tagged when he tired. Ball couldn't get near him before that.

Also disagree about the power. Ball was wobbled on a few occasions when Joe landed flush. When Joe tired and the shot-output decreased, Ball came more into the fight.

For the first half of the fight we saw Selkirk looking classy, hard to hit and he staggered Ball on a few occasions. For the second half of the fight we saw Joe getting hit more (still not much though) without throwing anywhere near as many shots as he did early on. When he did throw though he had alarming accuracy, though you could see the power had dipped.

Basically, when Joe tired, so did the performance. He's been massively inactive though and I think if Joe gets in the ring more often improving his conditioning, then he could be a star. If he could sustain what he was doing early against Ball, but for 12 rounds, he'll be in some great fights.

Why/how did Jason Ball win a £1,000 prize? Seen it mentioned on twitter and just wondering what its about.

Must have been from Buncey's pick for 'fight of the night'. The sponsors for the evening donated a grand to each fighter in the best fight.

I am not too keen on Paul Smith, they always put him on when one of his mates or brothers is fighting, totally bias every time I hear him, he even commented on his brothers future fight with Heffron as though it would be easy for his brother, then complimented Heffron after writing him off, Paul Smith just does not stay unbiased at all, I don't want to hear a commentator just complimenting there boys, then his partner in the commentary agreeing with everything he says.

The whole show was a bit of a let down for me, it just seemed like any other FWP/Queensberry bill, but without a main event. I thought the idea was to put a few of these prospects in challenging match-ups...

I agree, I thought the English title fight was a let down in quality and the other fights were too one sided, to be honest I watched it for the Selkirk fight, one sided matches are killing boxing, at least Ball tried to give it a go though he was overmatched and Selkirk never looked like losing.

I disagree ive slated Paul Smith on this forum for his fighting, but i think hes top drawer commentating&i enjoy listening to him&think he knows his stuff.... :TU:

Regarding the comments above I think Paul Smith is one of the best commentators that BN have. Maybe a bit biased when talking up his brothers or anyone from Gallaghers Gym, but I still think he is a good commentator.
I have said this before, but that bill was poor & long term will do no good for the long term health of boxing. Mismatches at its worst. I didnt think that the Selkirk v Ball fight was that great, but for it to get fight of the night says quite a lot about the bill.
Also not greatly taken on Terry Flanagan either.
