A corner cant retire a fighter mid round

i was readint the BBBoC rules and came across this little rule
3.43 The Boxer’s Manager, or in his absence the Chief Second, shall alone have the responsibility of retiring a Boxer in a Contest. An indication of retirement shall not be given while a round is in progress.

i'm sure i've seen a fight stopped mid round by a corner before

it raises a question for me, what if the corner feels the fighter has had enough but the ref doesn't, why can't the corner stop the fight?

If the corner throws in the towel, it is at the ref discretion to accept it. I would still say 9 times out of 10 they will.

If the corner steps into the ring then this results in DQ of the fighter but not a "retirement" or TKO as such.

So whilst it is the official duty of the ref to stop a contest mid round, the corner can still have plenty of unofficial say in it.

Not sure about the BBBofC but I think the WBO has some rule about only the ref stopping a contest mid round. That's why Micky Vann threw the towel back out when Earl's corner threw to in.

Not even a doctor can stop a fight it has to be the referee, both the corner men and the doctor can suggest to the ref but ultimately its the refs decision.

so if the trainner runs in the ring to stop it if the ref ignores the towel, its counted as a DQ and not as a stoppage?

I think that it would be a DQ and not a stoppage, because in the eye's of the ref the boxer is ok to continue.
An example would be Mike Tyson v Peter McNeeley.

Yes, and whoever came in would face a sanction for doing so.

The way to retire your fighter is to stand on the ring apron and wave your towel to get the refs attention not to throw it in. This is how Paul Edwards was retired Saturday night.

doesnt that count as the corner saying we want to retire the fighter?

if the rule was to be taken literally, the corner would have to wait until the end of the round before saying to the ref they dont want to continue

Or do what Glyn Rhodes did when he rightly pulled Ross Burkinshaw out recently - throw the towel with such a good aim that it covers the ref's face then he can't see what the f*ck he's doing

Has there been a fight where someone from the crowd or 3rd party has thrown in a towel to try and get a fight stopped?

either out of concern, or just trying to be a prat

Danny Williams vs Konstantin Airich
Ahmet Ohner threw the towel in from a ringside seat. He had a busy night, what with having rung the bell himself 45 seconds early in the previous round! And people say that men can't multi-task...
