Title Belts

Alot of the time when you see inside a boxers home on tv, they nearly always have a "trophy" room. My question is, obviously the belt is with the current champion, so when you win a title do you win the belt for keeps or are they replicas? I know you hav to defend the British title 3 times to keep it outright, do other governing bodies operate similar protocol?

My brothers kept all there championship belts except when garry won the southern area title (light heavy) as it was the old leather belt and when they changed it he had to give it back

Youget to keep them once you have won them except for the brit belt you have to defend that before you get to keep it

The board dont let boxer keep any of the belts, unless you win the Lonsdale outright...

its was only right that i give my british belt back, because I needed to make another defence to keep it

But i had to give back my southern area belt, oh well I got the memories ha ha

:TU:

it seems abit mean that you pay a licence fee to box and when you win something you're not aloud to keep it

Football teams don't keep the FA Cup when they win it, its for prestige, history, achievement etc. Think the Lonsdale belt rule of defences is about right for me. If a team defended the FA Cup for three or four seasons I think they should probably get to keep it too!

the fees in no way cover the cost of making one of those belts. if you've ever held one or seen them up close you'll see why.

i have held some. but how many boxers out there do not win a belt at all? surly the combinded amount would be more than adequate for covering a belt.

well if you're good enough, the rules now are make 3 defences and you get one to keep. job done.

if you look at the last person to attempt it, theophane's fees in combined title fights probably wouldn't have covered the cost of making a belt for him.

it's 9ct gold, not paint.

its £2422 for a WBC belt with 18ct gold

so how much would theophanes fees have come too?

The Londsale belts cost over £6,000. Do the maths.

For me, the three defence rule means at some point you'll fight someone who if you beat, merits the keeping of the belt. Theophane had defences against Ben Murphy (lightweight at short notice), Jason Cook (not in prime), and Darren Hamilton (short notice). I think across three fights at that level, the standard would usually be far higher.

Well that's not always the case, some fighters are good enought, better then British level
but they might be unlucky with injuries or illness to make The 2 or 3 defences to keep the belt.

Ryan's kept all of his belts other than the second time he won the British Title because he didn't fulfil the three defence rule.
Ryan holds the record for the fastest time to win a Lonsdale outright - 90 days.
When he beat Vuma to win the WBC International, Vincent got a bit stroppy so they let him keep it and sent Ryan a brand new one.
The Lonsdale is superb and beats the rest of them hands down.

Froch carried round a slightly frayed Lonsdale then when he won it outright, a new one was sent to him, or that one was refurbished or something.

The vacant WBC I think he took home that night, the IBF he won, went back with Bute - and Carl awaits his own now.

Ryan's Euro belt was falling to bits when he won it but the EBU swopped it and gave him a new one.
The Lonsdale belt he won outright had also seen better days but he had a quality refurb done.

I agree on this one, he didn't get the belt out right tho..

Yeah, I think you're right - It's plated these days?

Some place in bham makes them but Mappin & Webb in Sheffield used to make them back in the day.

The original belts were 22ct, then they went to 9ct. I know that one of Cooper's was silver but you can understand that after having to give him 3.

Actually, his gold one just sold:

As to Theophane, he would have got the belt had he won his last night, no? I think Jamie Moore said that the rules changed a few years back to 3 defences and they all had to be of a certain "standard"?
