Lennox Lewis

Did Lennox always have a British accent or was this something he adopted when he started fighting out of Britain? I can't recall him having his accent when he fought for Canada at the 88 Olympic Games and was surprised when I heard him talking like a Brit. I may be wrong as I know he was born in England and later moved to Canada when he was 12, so I guess that could explain the accent.

Do you think Lennox Lewis has a British accent? :oo

I'm British & I've never heard a Briton speak like him.

He has a distinct trans-atlantic drawl & that is part of the reason why he hasn't been taken to heart by Brits in the way he should have.

Don't get me wrong, there is no animosity towards him, but he isn't anywhere near as popular as Frank Bruno is or Henry Cooper was & that's a tragedy when you consider that he could be considered to be our greatest ever boxer & one of our greatest ever sports people.

Everyone hears a foreign accent when they listen to someone who's moved around a lot. To a Jamaican, a Brit, a Canadian or an American; he will sound different.

In the late 80's I heard a North American accent with a bit of British accent. Over 18 or so months into the early 90's the British accent became more pronounced. I never made out any other accent at any time but maybe it was just me

I always thought he sounded a tad ridiculous with whatever accent he has. I wouldn't say that to his face as I would get my teeth knocked out for sure.

I agree.

He's obviously got some sort of hybrid accent thing going on because people from different countries seem to think his accent hails from somewhere else, but he definitely doesn't have a UK accent.

You certainly have a winning bit claiming Lewis as arguably the best British boxer ever.

Good for you...and for anyone fortunate enough to read it

Ironically it was in his post fight speeches in america that a cockney tinge always emerged in his accent.

In the UK he just sounded like he had a north american accent.

At the end of his career it became clear he considered himself Jamaican first and the jamaican accent came out a lot more.

I never said he was; I said 'could be considered', which is something different altogether.

Besides, who died & made you a forum god whose opinions are fact?

This is true.

I noticed a bit of patois coming through in some of his post fight interviews.

Now you're trying to wriggle out of it? Please.

"Could be considered..." No, he could not. End of story.

Thanks for playing :TU:

I'm not trying to wriggle out of anything.

If I wanted to say Lennox Lewis was the greatest British boxer ever, I would say it & I couldn't care less what you think.

The fact is, I don't think that, but I do think he is worthy of consideration of the mythical title & I'm entitled to that opinion.

If you don't agree, good for you.

I have never posted on here to impress you & I'm not going to start now.

So take your you over sized ego elsewhere & try & goad someone else on another internet forum, or whatever other nefarious activity that you like to indulge in.

End of story.

Please explain to us all how Lewis possibly surpasses the records of Britain's greatest ever boxers.

I say this as someone who has Lewis as a top-10 (#8) all-time HW --- I certainly give him his due --- you, however, are talking about him with all the sense of a car-crash victim. Its perfectly fine to be hopelessly uninformed about an area of Boxing history, you know --- I have several blindspots, as does anyone --- but you've got to either fill out your knowledge, or respect your limits.

Know what Im saying?

Not being an experct on accents, I always just assumed his accent was British of some sort. It certainly was not North American.

Which Brits do you consider unarguably above Lewis?

Beyond dispute?

Ted Lewis
Jimmy Wilde

Theres a but of Canadian mixed in there with British in his accent, for obvious reasons.

Some of the people in boxing felt Lewis had a rainbow accent. Lewis was an all time great, but the man lived with his mother in his 30’s, and had a pet poodle.
