I've never actually looked into it but I'd be amazed if it was illegal.

It's an event between two consenting adults, so long as both agree.....

Activities surrounding the fight might be considered illegal, such as gambling, though there are markets for it on oddschecker.

Taking it a step further, there's nothing to stop you or I from setting up our own boxing board, or football association... much like the PDC in darts I guess. If you're not happy with the rules, set up your own.

He brings the money to the table, that's all the orgs are bothered about.

If they don't like it, they will simply create their own org for the purpose of the title fight, whenever it happens. It'll have about as much credibility as the others.

The end game you espouse is quite right. I do think it's an issue though, simply because the people involved have been using the proposed sanctioning as a basis for the fight's legitimacy.

I am increasingly aware that a dwindling minority of people actually care about the politics though

Granted, but Haye doesn't give a damn about credibility, hasn't for quite some time.

He'll say or do anything for a buck or a few column inches.

True, if they weren't bothered about sanctioning they'd have never brought Luxembourg on board.

I suppose they're wary as to Joe Public's attitude/knowledge of unlicensed boxing. I'd imagine most people see it as barbaric type stuff, with trained fighters beating bouncers and rugby players half to death on a routine basis.

If Luxembourg do a U-TURN, who is going to officiate? Presumably this would rule out Micky Vann & co?

I'd have thought Mickey Vann would still do it, I presume he would have taken a Luxembourg license just for this fight so will do anything necessary or if he still works for Boxing Union of Ireland who are members of the EBU will they stop him being involved.

Even if no one sanctions it and it goes ahead, Vann will do it. Especially as someone is filming it.
