These lists were compiled by taking the P4P ratings of The Ring at the end of each year from 1990-2009. This is per decade only so fighters will not perform as well when they have crossed over multiple decades. Finishing a year as P4P no.1 earns 10 points, while finishing P4P no.10 earns 1 point. Beside each score is the number of years during the decade the fighter finished in the P4P top 10 ratings.

Any obvious notable omissions or do these lists do well to include the top fighters from each of these decades? I personally find it strange that Martinez has apparently done enough this current decade already to merit a no.10 ranking during the 1990's and a no.11 ranking during the 2000's. For me he is the most over ranked on the entire list given his record.

Also, what currently unranked active fighters do you expect to make the list for this decade?

You touch on it, but a bit of a handicap for those fighters who span the cusp of decade into the next. Also this system rewards longevity as much as anything. But a top list of names and can't see too many omissions.

I am almost certain that Vitali is not going to be on the '10s list by the way ....

Vitali is currently no.9 so unless he loses or retires before the end of the year I can't see him dropping out of the top 10.

Also with Pac (2) v Bradley (8) and Ward (5) v Dawson (10), there's potential for one or two of these to drop out of the top 10 altogether, which would potentially move Vitali up the rankings before the year end.

Here are the total ratings from 1989 to date. Obviously this penalises fighters relevant prior to 1989 but that's when the P4P rankings began, at least according to the Ring.

It's a shame to see Mayweather and Pacquiao in the Top 4, yet they don't seem to be able to arrange to fight each other. When you look at De La Hoya, he fought Mayweather (1), Whitaker (3), Pacquiao (4), Hopkins (5), Trinidad (7), Chavez twice (8), Mosley twice (8). That is a seriously impressive resume, although his record was 3-6 in those bouts and his only wins were against two fighters arguably beyond their peaks in Whitaker and Chavez.

The glaring omission is Lennox Lewis in the 90s.

You'd have thought he'd at least have been in the top 10 by the end of 1999! Just goes to show how much respect he has garnered since retiring and how much he was disliked/victimised when active.

Yeah I thought that was a big surprise also. Jermain Taylor has more points than him! It seems nobody put much faith in anyone in the Heavyweight division outside of Holyfield and Bowe. Vitali Klitschko is the big absentee on this for me and even Wladimir seems underrated with just 8 points given his dominance.

I've said it already but should Sergio Martinez really be ranked no.3 P4P two years in succession on the back of wins over Williams, Pavlik, Macklin and Barker and having lost to Margarito and Williams before that and only managing a draw with Kermit Cintron? Even Macklin and Barker were able to hang with him until the later rounds when stamina came into play, and neither of these guys are P4P material.

Only four Brits have finished in the year ending rankings since 1989:

I suppose cases could have been made for Benn, Eubank, Collins, Haye at various times, while the likes of Khan, Froch & Brook are probably only another big win away from getting in (more so the former two).

I think in hindsight benn was def p4p material

What a fornicating genius you are. Vitali is 40 years old and seemingly a lot smarter than most fighters who fight beyond that age. How many fights do you think he has left? He may well be retired by the end of 2013 so end 2012 could well be the only time he ends up on these P4P end of year rankings, regardless of whether you agree with them or not.

This was my point on Vitali not making the '10s list - 2 years around the lower ends, is only going to give him a very low score using your formula, a score highly unlikely to be in the top ten of all fighters.

It's not about where he is at the end of any given year. It's where he stands at the end of the decade. Less of the insults; your the one who's looking at this wrong.
