Although it isn't an immediate plan as such (currently at university), I have always wondered how one goes about getting their foot in the door. It's a natural ambition as a life-long follower of boxing, and I have always maintained the habit of scoring bouts as I watch them, so I thought that this would be an obvious choice of forum to get some advice from those in the know.

I would assume that after training, one would need to begin with judging amateur bouts before they can judge in the professional ranks. If so, are amateur judges unpaid, like the boxers themselves? (wouldn't stop me) What is the method of training one undergoes to become a judge? Is there a formal course that is required? I would assume that experience would be gained as a result of sitting with judges and comparing cards, initially.

I will also contact the ABAE, but thought I would ask here, first.

Any tips would be really helpful!

Specsavers? Most uk judges should.

You can't be a judge (in Britain) without being a ref first, as far as I know.

It's a long old route through this. Contact your area council first.

However, I'm led to believe there is a board that will have a few vacancies for officials soon.

Google 'Toni Tiberi' and take it from there.

That surprises me, as I would have thought it would be judges that go on to become referees, rather than vice versa.

Ian is right there is no judges license with the BBBofC. To become a judge you have to be a referee and work your way through the different class's of refereeing. To become a referee you will have to first apply to your area council for interview. Good luck if you decide to take it up, it is a long process.
