Larry O: a quick response

i felt i owed to the forum to say a few words when it wasnt busy as i dont wanna argue with anyone or create any bad feelings. yes i had been doping for 6 years but for most of u guys to think my opponents were not because of their physiques is quite ridiculous. i know for a fact that 3 guys i fought as a pro were on stuff although i will not mention any names and the majority of the boxers u all love so dear are on stuff, fact and this is from me talking to them, seeing them buy stuff or talking to their training personnel. Cheating is when u are the only prson doing something and since i know that i wasnt the only person doing it, it cant be defined as cheating. a large minority if not majority of boxers are doping and the naivity of the public to think that mine is an isolated case is staggering. Also i am so surprised that i get so much stick but the guys i look up to in the sport like roy jones, shane moseley and james toney who have all been caught dont get as much stick. Also lets not forget the holyfield incident with evan fields story, vargas and even mayweather using banned painkillers. if u hate me for doping fine, but then be prepared to hate all ur fav boxers and indeed athletes.
I appreciate the support I got from this forum and thats why i am coming on here and telling u this. Also i will not hide away as that is not my style and i will be back in boxing when the ban ends like it or not. Walk a mile in my shoes b4 u judge me.

Thanks for the post Larry.

Sad fact is, yes your right, athletes, boxers or otherwise use 'illegal' substances. PEDs or whatever. I can kind of see where your coming from on this, though it is disappointing to hear that so many boxers do this. From what your saying and you would have insight, it is a much, much larger issue in the sport than most, myself included had probably believed.

Khan, Pacquiao, Chavez Jnr, Mayweather, Canelo, Cotto, Donaire, Arce etc.....to think that all of these and thensome, 'might', 'could' be using these substances is saddening, but a reality, I suppose.

Good luck in wherever this road takes you.

well must have been 3 boxers you beat that were on them as wouldnt have been dan peret or big john lol, I feel sorry for you and its a sad story but two wrongs dont make a right just cause other boxers do it doesnt mean everyone can, and judging by sound of things and your insight things need tightned upo badly.

Why wont you name names? You'd be more respected if you did and would help the sport as a whole.

Larry, you've always come across as a sound guy on here but I have to call bullsh*t regarding this point. Cheating is breaking the rules irrespective of what others are doing. Just because others are cheating, if you then do so yourself it's still cheating, there's simply no getting around that. I credit you for coming on here and you make some fair points about the double-standards of fans, but what you've written above reads like a playground excuse I'm afraid.

I can understand you not wanting to name names from that perspective so thats fair enough. There must be a way you could help the authorities catch other people doing it though and if you did it might force boxing to change for the better which it really needs. Couldnt you give tip offs then instead or something? Yeah I understand that would mean you having to be a grass but you have been banned for 4 years for what you've done and theres other guys out there doing the same or possibly even worse and making money out of it.

I have a question Larry its that alright? EPO which you got caught for, thats to improve stamina right? Also the 6 years you admitted to taking stuff, were you ever drug tested throughout that period? Im just wondering if you were but managed to avoid being caught through using masking agents or something of the like? I know thats a big problem hence why ive asked. Cheers

The sad thing is you've been caught, banned and you still think you've done nothing wrong!

Trying to justify your actions because 'you know' of other boxers juicing is unacceptable.

You should have been banned for life.

There has been a perceived problem in my opinion that boxing fans and commentators in this country have generally thought of "dopers" as Americans and an American problem with Balco and the like. But it seems according to Larry - he's at the tip of an ice-berg. With testing procedures so lax in this country there's not really a deterant to stop users who'll do anything to get any type of advantage.

Hopefully this situation will highlight the need for more stringent testing, though I won't hold my breath. Anyway, full respect to Larry for coming on here and at least giving his side, whether you thing he should be hung out to dry or not.

I was at your last fight Arnie against Montiero who was found to have used PEDs after the fight. It was a pretty brutal spectacle and you could have been seriously injured from some of those shots - I agree drug cheats in boxing should get a lifetime ban

Drug cheating ,and suggesting its widespread ,is an absolute insult to all those many 'clean' boxers out there who I'm certain are in the vast majority . The big man might have knowledge of whose also taking , among his circle of friends . If he wants our sympathy ,and to prevent the apparent need to 'equalise ' the situation in fights for others, then he can start with exposing those he knows of to the authorities . But , of course , that takes real guts !!

The Board can maybe make a start in sorting out this mess by interviewing his trainer , manager , promoter and regular sparring partners .

big man ive always been a fan of yours and its obvious you have made some mistakes, ive made a few in my time also so im not gunna have a pop at you about that but what i cant accept is the attitude that everybody else is at so why shouldnt i, that doesnt sit well with me, ive been a professional athlete for 15 years and never taken a cough medicen i shouldnt have, ive got my doubts about some fighters also but thats on them, im 100% clean and would rather lose every fight clean than win 1 juiced up, and i think im in the majority not the minority, good luck in whatever you do next like i said ive always liked you and wish you well :TU:

We're not on here 24/7 so if a potentially defamed party sees the post and saves it, it can be difficult and potentially expensive.

So be careful because individual posters can be in bother too.

The Dwain Chambers approach of "I'll do it because everyone else is" has already been proven as an extremely bad career choice.

Telling the authority that a rival is using gear is not grassing, it should be commended. I see world champions in our gym, absolutely beasting themselves - and they deserve 100% respect for their achievements. They have boxed before puberty, they're bodies are absolutely different to those who start when they're 18+ years old.

I think taking gear is only good for quick gains. In any gym there are naturals who have lifted for years and are so strong. Yet a newbie will come along, go nuts on steroids and protein shakes and be lifting as much as them in 18 months. But long term they won't keep their strength/gains like the natural does.. Without taking steroids. And after a while they plateau and begin taking even more.

That mindset of complete confidence on account of the elevated teste in blood, becomes a complete nightmare when they stop. One of my work friend became borderline suicidal when he stopped taking them, even with post-steroid therapy like tamoxifenetc etc. Mentally and physically he crashed badly.

15 years ago, looking 'big and muscular' almost became a fashion trend. The use of sunbeds and steroids increased ten-fold. Men strutting round like peacocks in t-shirts 3-sizes too small to show of their artificial 'guns'.

I just think they have incredibly low self esteem. Sure they're is nothing wrong with looking in shape, working out is enjoyable for many. But that 20% of Fitness First members or 85% of spit-and-sawdust gyms than stack themselves up with sustinol, deca and whatever aren't ever going to be truly happy within themselves.

They're way to concerned with what people think of them, judging them etc. And taking heavy steroids will only worsen their fears in the long run. It completely warps your testosterone / serotonin levels to the point of clinical depression.

So is it all worth it? Absolutely not.

Larry - I personally think the horse has bolted with regards naming names.

"Do things sincerely, not as strategy"

If you blow the lid, people will think your doing it for yourself to claw back integrity, rather than cleanse boxing.

Yep I second Curtis here really, or anyone else who has that line of thought. It's a dangerous sport and by making those decisions you could have badly hurt somebody. It was a very irresponsible action and regardless of what anyone else does your own consience shouldn't have allowed you to do that.

I can't help but think that any victory you scored must have being very hollow as you don't really know if you were (naturally) the better man. In essence that's the lifetime punishment really- you've lost any glory and when all the money's gone that will be heartbreaking to think all those hours training wasted.

I take people on the pads who juice and they are a different animal. It is totally an unfair advantage and the commonly heald misconception that roid heads lose stamina quick is also not nessacarily the case...

Everyone makes mistakes in life- good luck finding the right path larry but it shouldn't be in a boxing ring IMO

The problem is this, I've had 21 fights and been a pro for 6 years and I've never been tested for anything, people will always cheat if they think they have a chance of getting away with it, and if your a pro boxer you have a very good chance getting away with it, I have the right as a fighter to know if the man I'm fighting is clean or not,the board need to get with it and start taking my and other clean fighters safety more serious because I feel like I'm being let down by people who are in charge
