SPORTING EVENT OF THE SUMMER JUST WEEKS AWAY
Sunderland’s Stadium of Light plays host to both Bruce Springsteen and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers over the coming weeks, but the famous football stadium looks set to rock even more on July 15 when the opening bell for ‘Summer Rumble 2’ sounds. Living up to it’s promise of being the sporting event of the summer, the professional boxing show is currently scheduled to showcase 18 bouts involving some of the brightest fighting talent from the North East.
At a packed press conference on Wednesday June 20 to promote the show, headliner Martin Ward predicted an ‘inside the distance’ victory in his English bantamweight title fight with Liverpool’s Mike Robinson. “I respect anybody who gets in the ring because it takes real courage to get through the ropes, but I’ve got very quick hands and I think he’ll come onto me which will suit me down to the ground. This title fight’s been a long time coming and I can’t wait. I think it’ll be a late stoppage.”
Chief support will see the International Masters title being contested when Hartlepool prospect Peter Cope takes on Redcar’s experienced Gavin Reid in a featherweight contest. ‘Copey’ has shown great potential in his first year as a pro and will enter the contest unbeaten in five and with huge support cheering him on. In the other corner, Reid, a veteran of 21 fights, has been in with some of Britain’s best and is predicting a great fight. “I think our styles will gel and it’s going to be a good spectacle. Winning this belt will definitely give my career a lift off.”
Sunderland’s David Dolan has also been added to the already packed bill, with the former star amateur and former British title challenger convinced that, at the age of 32, he still has what it takes to make an impact on the domestic cruiserweight scene. “I definitely still think I can win the British title. I’ve been really unlucky in the past with injuries and bad decisions but I feel good and want to put the bad luck behind me and get a good win in July. I’ll fight any cruiserweight in Britain.”
The rest of the undercard is stacked with North East talent including unbeaten fighters Mark Clauzel, Robert Ismay, Greg O’Neill, Lee ‘Lightning’ Mould, Anthony ‘Babyface’ Nelson, Paul Archer, Craig Dixon, and Shafiq Asif; South Shields’ entertainer David Lake; and debutants David Ferguson Jnr and Callum Winton.
“We’ve got fighters from every corner of the North East on this show, and they’re all really talented,” stated promoter Phil Jeffries. “It really is going to be a great afternoon of boxing. There are some absolutely cracking bouts on the bill and if you’re a fight fan then you won’t want to miss it.
