I see that the Haye team have refused to allow Micky Vann to referee the contest on the grounds that he is too old and too small to referee a wild fight.

Does the size of the referee really matter? I mean as long as he is a competent referee it should not really be an issue as finding a referee big enough to separate two guys of this size from engaging in a bit of afters if they really wanted to would surely be impossible anyway.

Booth also mentions the 'long history between Vann and Al Legedly' which is perhaps more to the point.

The bout might as well be sponsored by Age Concern. Paul Thomas is knocking on and last time I saw John Coyle he was saying 'Gladiators, ready!'

The main problem with getting a referee is obviously that the BBBC will ban anyone who is involved from refereeing on BBBC licenced shows so it leaves very few options.

They sometimes have guest referees in the WWE. I reckon it'll add spice to an already tasty match if one of the Klits refereed it!

I'd prefer Rowdy Roddy Piper. The picture of professionalism and impartiality in the bout he reffed between Bret Hart and Yokozuna at Wrestlemania 10. Tyson didn't exactly show great impartiality in that after the fight he knocked the guy who lost out for complaining.............actually given that Chisora is gonna get beat and will probably complain I'd say Tyson is an excellent choice!!!

It does matter. When Tyson and Lewis fought that had to get Eddie Cotton who is 6ft 5 and about 230 pounds to ref it to deal with the personalities in the ring.

They were aiming for a hump backed dwarf but Haye and Booth have said no to him.

I keep looking for the earliest indication as to how the fight won't happen . I had thought a back injury to Haye , then the fall out with Chisora and his trainer ,and now the objections to the referee .
Maybe I've simply been wrong all along ,and this farce will go ahead after all ? However , I STILL believe it will be postponed .

I think the Wlad as a guest ref would be class

In all seriousness though I do think there is some weight in the whole small guy pushing pension age reffing two 230+ guys in a ring where it could get nasty. Is he going to be able to take real control if things start to get messy. Physically breaking them up in the clinches?

What about Roger Tillerman? He'd suit the pantomime occasion

I side 100% with Team Haye.

Sure, it would be nice to see Vann on these shores again, but he can thank loose cannon Chisora for losing the gig.

Vann did just fine with Bruno and Lewis and had to take them task several times. He was a little slow in stopping the fight but that wasn't due to his size (or lack of).

Of course team Haye are gonna object to Mickey boy.
He refereed a high proportion of Bunny's headline fights and well, let's just say he was a homer.
In the early Hatton years of serious cuts he always found a way of letting the fight go on !
Justice for Ramsay and Thaxton !!!! Both fights should have been stoppped !!!!
I don't agree with the fight but if it were to fall by the wayside now well boxing would slump further into the abyss.
Dalcumly has mentioned a few indicators that maybe all is not well.
So we need a 6' 5'' refereee who is semi retired and does not give a fook if he gets suspended. Answers on a postcard ....

I was of course referring to the dozen or so Wbu fights he did for Hatton.

Size isn't really the issue is it? Didn't stop Mills Lane taking control of big men, and he reffed some fights with much more bad blood than this one, Tyson biting Holyfield a good example. This isn't going to be a brawl, Haye will backpedal and box his way through the fight I should imagine.

Shame, I like Mickey Vann, he has better footwork than most boxers.
