Speculation Rises For Mundine vs. Geale Rematch

By Brendan George: It is expected to be announced tomorrow that former 2 time WBA Super Middleweight Champion Anthony ‘The Man’ Mundine will fight for the IBF North American Middleweight title in his scheduled bout with Bronco ‘The Superman’ McKart on July 14th 2012. The promotion dubbed “When Worlds Collide” is promoted by Vlad Warton of Millennium Events and will be held at the Palms Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, USA.

Mundine, (43-4 -25 KOs) won the WBA Interim Light Middleweight title in November last year and was expected to fight WBA Light Middleweight Champion Austin Trout this summer. Negotiations have deteriorated between the Trout and Mundine camps, with both parties going their own way. The interesting factor is Mundine’s decision to fight for an IBF Middleweight regional title, and in this writers opinion, that decision points squarely to achieving a ranking at Middleweight with the IBF and challenging fellow countryman/ IBF Middleweight Champion Daniel Geale.

The question regarding a Geale vs. Mundine rematch was directed to the Australian agent of Millennium Events, Brendan Bourke. While being candid about his replies, Mr Bourke did offer the following comments: “Millennium Events is proud to be promoting Anthony Mundine in Las Vegas on the 14th of July at the Palms Resort and Casino. While the fight is at Middleweight and possibly sanctioned for an IBF regional title, it’s drawing a long bow associating the sanctioning of this title belt with a future Geale rematch”. While Mr Bourke has attempted to distance the Mundine camp from any concept of a rematch with team Geale, he did concede the following: “Millennium Events and Team Mundine are focused on getting a World Title shot in Las Vegas late this year, however if Geale was to unify the WBA and IBF Middleweight titles come September, that could be something Team Mundine might be interested in.”

As for the author, I stand by my speculation that Anthony Mundine is positioning himself for a shot at fellow countryman and Middleweight IBF champion Daniel Geale end of 2012. Meanwhile Anthony Mundine has arrived in Las Vegas in preparation for his upcoming bout with Bronco McKart (54-9 -32 KO’s). Millennium Events Promoter Vlad Warton stated “ Everything is ready for a great fight night on July 14th. Two former World Champions meet head to head at the Palms Resort and Casino and we are proud to be helping Anthony Mundine achieve his dream of fighting in America”. Mr Warton continued, “The main event is USA vs. Australia and in the co feature USA vs. Russia. This will be a great night of international championship boxing”.

In what will be an action packed fight card, the main support bout will be contested over 12 rounds for the IBF International Light Heavyweight title between IBF #11 Dmitry Sukhotsky 18-1 (13KO) and Cornelius White 19-1 (16 KO).

Geale has moved on from Mundine. There are bigger fish to fry. Of course, this is my opinion only!

Geale is today's man. Mundine is yesterday's. No interest at all in them meeting again.

 Heard a cross yesterday to Kevin Iole of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was asked about the upcoming Mundine v McKart bout and what the interest level was like in the US for Mundine. His answer "Zero". Iole thought they'd be lucky to get 500 people attend the fight.

Agree Geale has bigger fish to fry, if he can beat Sturm, well that will certainly get the worlds attention, and Mundine isnt he going to fight Mayweather and be the first man to beat him !

Mundine, our self-styled superman is encountering a bit of: truth; justice and the American way along his path to glory:

Any rematch with Daniel Geale would have to be pretty remote as Daniel has far more important bouts ahead of him.

I thought Geale v Mundine # 1 was a very entertaining fight and very close. Boxing is all about money at this level and while the first fight was a good money earner the second fight would be much bigger provided both boys keep winning. I don't think they need each other however I also think they will fight again at some stage. Mundine fighting for the IBF MW North American title raises a few eyebrows as well.

If Geale keeps winning he has no need whatsoever for Mundine. Geale holds the IBF title he won from Sylvester in Germany. Has Sturm coming up, again in Germany, for the WBA Super title and if he wins that would be a shoe in to fight Golovkin for WBA & IBO titles.

Mundine is so little known in the US that Dunkin could not even find him a fight. Now he's fighting the barely remembered McKart on a small time TV station for a vacant title that's been plucked out of thin air at the last minute.

No. If Geale keeps winning he has no need whatsoever for Mundine.

the fight is on the same night, in the same town as a golden boy promotion - khan v garcia. this makes no sense at all.

the casual sports fan who doesnt know much about the sport is obviously gonna pick the khan fight to attend, and the hardcore fan is obviously also gonna pick the khan fight to attend.

I should say I enjoyed the first fight.
I was disappointed Mundine decided to vacate rather then rematch Geale when the IBO ordered the rematch.

I should also say, I would welcome the rematch, IF Mundine genuinely works his way into the IBF mandatory position.

i would like it as a comeback type fight if geale loses to sturm. but im not so sure there is much point otherwise at this stage.
mundine has shown he isnt keen on taking on the big boys on the world stage, and gealey clearly is. so if geale beats sturm he should continue to raise his stocks rather than take a fight like that.

With the almost total lack of interest being shown in the McKart fight I get the impression the attendance and pay per view will be very low. A further indication Mundine is yesterdays man.

Meanwhile, veteran Australian middleweight Sam Soliman fights Giovanni Lorenzo of the Dominican Republic in Geelong on August 28 in an IBF eliminator.

Solid test for Sam. Lorenzo has only lost to good ones in N'Jikam, Sturm, Sylvester and Marquez.
