Updated: FORMER boxing champion Henry Wharton is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car following a suspected fight between travellers.

The 44-year-old world title challenger was taken to York Hospital with head and back injuries following an incident in Murton Lane on Saturday.

Police confirmed a 35-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail.

It is understood Mr Wharton may have been injured after he intervened in a pre-arranged fight which took place at about 4.30pm on Saturday in Murton Lane.

Local sources said as many as 15 people may have been involved. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the 44-year-old man – named locally as Mr Wharton – was hit by a car.

A resident of Murton Lane, who did not wish to be named, said: “I was told that one of the people involved was a male youth and hid in an outbuilding, and asked one of the neighbours to get him a taxi and get him out of there. When the neighbour refused to do so unless he told them his name, the youth ran off across some fields.”

The resident said: “They said he had a wound which looked like a knife wound on his arm, quite a big gash that was bleeding. While he was hiding there were a couple of cars going up and down the road with people hanging out looking for someone. It sounds like quite a serious thing.”

Several residents said a man had been hit by a car in the incident, and a vehicle was left deserted in a ditch in Murton Lane.

The road was closed until about 4.45pm yesterday, and locals said police carried out forensic tests on the vehicle before removing it.

Yesterday, more than a dozen officers, including firearm units and police dogs, attended the travellers’ site in James Street, York, to execute a warrant in connection with Saturday’s incident.

Numerous onlookers stopped to watch from the car park of nearby Morrisons supermarket, along with residents from the site who said they were prevented from entering during the police activity. One woman said a police helicopter had been hovering overhead for about an hour.

Sergeant Martin Wedgwood, of North Yorkshire Police, who led officers into the site at about 5pm, said a police support unit wearing body armour were also on hand but said officers had experienced “no hostility whatsoever” while executing the warrant.

As reported on thepress.co.uk yesterday, there was a heavy police presence, including police dogs, in the Hull Road and Lawrence Street area of the city on Saturday.

The Press understands that officers were responding to intelligence about a pre-arranged fight at some time that day between members of the travelling community.

One resident from the James Street site, which is home to about 20 travellers’ caravans, told The Press he had been told he could not go back to his caravan until Sunday’s police action had ended.

He said: “My wife and kids are in there and being kept inside. I haven’t been able to get on site. I think it will be a lingering job for an hour or so before they let everyone on site.”

He said he did not know what the action was about, and expressed “shock” at the number of officers at the scene.

“They could have dealt with this in a reasonable manner but this isn’t reasonable. My kids are in there and they will be petrified.”

King of the ring

Henry Wharton is the former undefeated British, Commonwealth and European super-middleweight champion, whose only three losses were all in fights for the world title.

In the 1990s, he fought for the world title against Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Robin Reid.

Since retiring from the ring in 1998, he has coached dozens of young people throughout York and North Yorkshire and also ran a fish and chip shop in Blossom Street.

He is currently redeveloping the former Regent cinema in Acomb into a new 10,000 square-foot gymnasium, for boxing training, and for community use, with fitness and Zumba dance classes, and a state-of-the-art gym.

At best, it doesn't bode well for his gym opening in a couple of weeks. It's currently being constructed. He will be in hospital still i'd imagine.

At worst he might not walk again.

Very few people who come on here will know the real story and that article is slightly misleading. I am not going to say too much, but Henry is o.k, but still in hospital. The 35 year old who was arrested was with Henry! The Press makes it sound like he was involved. What i will say is, it is difficult sometimes for a man of his stature with a huge family in that world, problems sometimes arise that have nothing to do with him

I agree; I imagine that his renown can be a bit of an headache for him at times; I'll bet his name gets brought up and thrown around by lots of people who are playing the game. He always seemed a pleasant and quiet man, hope he's up and about quickly and it all blows over without anyone getting hurt.

Micky What your saying is right, in our culture its hard to lose that type of reputation once you've got it , i am a traveler me self and although i dont know the Wharton family personally (i am from down south),i do know of them and people that know them and they are not known as blagards or trouble makers so i find it strange that he would get caught up in some BS like this :-?
Henry was always my hero growing up,loved the way he fought ,i met him with my dad when he fought eubanks and Benn ,he was a real gent and a pleasure to talk to .

A MACHETE was used in the attack on champion boxer Henry Wharton, that left him seriously injured in hospital, The Press understands.

Police said yesterday that the 44-year-old former middleweight champion was lucky to be alive following the attack in Murton Lane, York, on Saturday.

Officers have now arrested three more people over the attack, which left Mr Wharton with serious back, head and ankle injuries. Sources have told The Press that he also received gash wounds to his upper body, from a machete. North Yorkshire Police did not confirm this, but said it was part of their inquiries.

Police said yesterday that a 26-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both from York, had been arrested in the Blackpool area, and remain in police custody for questioning.

A a 23-year-old local man was also arrested in York yesterday afternoon.

Mr Wharton was struck by a car after he reportedly tried to intervene in a pre-arranged bare-knuckle fight between members of the travelling community in Murton Lane on Saturday.

A 35-year-old man was arrested in the Wigginton Road area at about 7.30pm that day and released on bail as inquires continue.

Former world-title challenger Wharton is still in a serious condition in hospital, receiving treatment for several broken vertebrae and a shattered ankle, The Press understands.

Detective Chief Inspector Nigel Costello, of North Yorkshire Police, said he still wanted more witnesses, despite the four arrests so far.

He said: “A man is in hospital with serious injuries and he is lucky to be alive.

“If you have any information about what happened to him and how he sustained his injuries, I urge you to contact the police or Crimestoppers with information.

“It doesn’t matter how small you may think the information you have is. It could be absolutely vital to the investigation and it is important that you come forward as ASAP .

This rings of the Doncaster incident where Bartley Gorman's leg was almost cut off by the Gaskin's.

I know a little more, given relations i have - but not obliged to shed any more light given investigations.

Im sure it will all come out in the wash. But it was a wholly cowardly, stupid situation.

From what I've heard Henry's nephew was going to have an organised fight with another traveller and Henry's brother (this lads dad) was there with him to make sure there was fair play.

The other set of travellers turned up mob handed so Henry got the call off his brother to come down and help.

When he got there he was rammed a couple of times by a car and pinned against a wall while the other set of Travellers (Also from York apparently) tried to cut him up.

Dispicable act very similar to what happened to Louis Welch at Appleby a few years ago................
