Amir Khan responds to IBF super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch's comments that the Bolton fighter's boxing career is now "a write-off" following his defeat to Danny Garcia at the weekend.

"Carl's always got his little things to say and I'll leave it to that really. If he wants to retire he can retire," he says. "I'm in a tougher division, I'm fighting better opposition and I'm a bigger name than him. That's what burns him really."

I know there doesn't seem to be much love lost between the both of them but that is a patently ridiculous statements based on the current rosters of each division.

I will obviously concede the "bigger name" point, more's the pity...........

Froch has rather become Sky Boxing's rent-a-quote lately. Why does he even need to comment ?

Because he was asked to. It wouldn't be great viewing if on Skysports news they just said

'and now we have Carl Froch joining us on the phone, so Carl what are your thought on Amir Khans recent loss?'

If you heard the questions put to Carl on talksport and the approach and tone in his reply, you'd read nothing into it.

Until the the pricks at 'bbc boxing' and ESPN uk start running ridiculous bi-stories and outrageous headlines.

They're just scraper sites who don't know Carl and have never spoken to him. Ever.

Khan has been quite humble (by his standards) in some of the things I've read/heard attributed to him at various times post-fight so was slightly surprised he has come out with such a ridiculous statement.

I know we are saying the media have blown up a bit of a non-story (I did hear the Froch interview at the time) but is there actually any genuine beef between the two by the way? I half remember Froch being on Ringside pre-Bute and Khan sending him a video message saying "good luck". However it was essentially him doing a self-promo along the lines of him saying he had a big fight himself coming up and he hoped Carl was able to do what Khan knew he himself was going to do an win. It cut back to Froch and he looked a bit non-plussed and said something like "well its nice he took time out to make that video" or something equally half-hearted about it!

Khan regularly put out disparaging interviews saying 'Froch was jealous of his skills, that he sold more tickets in Nottingham that Froch could' and other nonsense.

He tweeted endlessly that Froch lost to a nobody the day after the Kessler fight. Whilst bragging he was moving into a flat next to snoop dog etc.

Prior to that, he was asked about the Prescott loss. Carl said he 'looked like he'd been hit with a lump hammer' and that the jaw section could continue to be his undoing in bigger fights. Whilst the rest of the boxing world continued to stroke & cuddle Khan and swerve the reality of the Prescott loss.

I think they spoke briefly at the BBC sports personality awards and Froch explained his comments personally and it seemed the rift had ran its course. Until post-Kessler.

The reality is, other boxers will stand by Khan's side, trying to tap into his fan share. Froch will always talk straight. Often without malice, but in print it looks harder that it was actually said.

Personally I prefer that approach than sugar-coating stuff. Obviously that does not dovetail with the chorus of back-slappers and cheer leaders that Khan surrounds himself with.

The way BBC presented Froch interview was a bit out of order is you listen to whole thing.

Problem is, it is presented to Khan thus "Carl Froch said you should retire.....", which is likely to wind most people up after they've just lost.

Imagine what Froch would have said if, after Ward lost, someone said to him "Amir Khan thinks you should retire because you have found your level".

froch said that if he was amir khan he would retire!!
