Who was the boxer from the crowd who stepped into the ring?

I was telling a mate that one time a fight was cancelled at the very last minute so a boxer sitting in the audience stepped into the ring to take the place of the boxer who'd pulled out. Does anybody remember when and who this was?

It's an apocryphal. The original opponent, Mike Williams, hadn't shown up for the weigh in the day before and they knew he wasn't going to fight. Tomashek didn't really come out of the audience, he had already been on standby if Williams dropped out. They just orchestrated this WWF 'plucked out the crowd' scene to try distract from the shitty match.
Horrifyingly, allegedly put together worse WBO title fights than Morrison vs Tomashek. Anyone for Herbie Hide vs Damon Reed?

Charley "The Devil" Green famously went from the crowd to fight the great Jose Torres. He'd already had a hotdog and a beer before the fight started.

That's always the one I think of as a really cynical, shocking piece of match-making.

Cant complain, betting on KO1 paid for 12 of our nights out in cardiff. May aswel have handed out cash at the turnstrile.
My mate did the above in and EBF contest, he'd had one fight previously and was told the opponent was a debutant from Sheffield. He lots via points over 3. in the bar afterward the lad from sheffield had a good old chuckle because his record was actually 11-2 and well the promoters knew. Dangers of EBF etc... I think that fight is on youtube.

Hi gents,
howsabout the chap who won a WBO belt at Fly or Superflyweight a few years back...... one minute sitting in the crowd eating a doughnut and the next minute he was borrowing shorts and boots, then he was suddenly fighting, and he won the belt!
Isidro Garcia perhaps?
Can anyone remember?

he follows me on twitter. seemingly because i told him he looked like a friedn of mine, Colin Bulldog, #SmallAndFreaky
On the WBO super flyweight thingy - he wouldve have had to have been weighed and assesed by a doctor etc... before stepping in the ring and fighting, so it wouldve been a set up, I assume.

And he knocked Torres down in round one too I remember hearing. And he also demanded $10 on top of his purse as he paid for his ticket to get in the Garden that night. Legend has it he said "I'll be damned if I'm paying to watch myself fight"

I always find it difficult to think too badly of that one, simply due to winning a few quid in the only time I've ever been tempted to bet on the round a fight would finish in! I'd watched Gunn on YouTube in a mental fight against Shelby Gross and it looked like a sure thing. Which it was.
More shockingly, but less remarked on, is the fact Adamek was allowed to defend his IBF title against Gunn a couple of years later. Gunn vs Gross II obviously did the trick.

There's an interview with Morrison a few years back where he said that Hunter was already showing signs the week of the fight that he wanted out and they had Tim on standby...however, he WAS in the audience and he was sucking back a couple of beers.
This is corroborated by Al Bernstein in his book in some detail.

Did you know that Mike Williams was the other HW (Union Cane) that Morrison won the title from in Rocky 5?
Imagine if the fight had went ahead? talk about life imitating art!
