Got to say, I've been really impressed with his commentating on the Olympic boxing, he obviously knows his stuff and his knowledge of the GB squad has been good to hear.

Let's hope sky get rid of Jim watt and get him involved more or even allegedly

Sorry, dont agree. He definitely knows his stuff but when him and Allan Green get together, they seem to pick one guy who they favour, no matter what the opponent lands. Annoys the shit out of me.

Woodhall is better when he is with the other guy, the tall black guy who's name escapes me (Ronald?), who is pretty good each time I have seen him on allegedly and at the Olympics. He does actually try to be impartial.

Richie Woodhall is just ok. He has been involved in the commentary for 10 years now but I actually think Paul Smith is a great pundit on allegedly.

Agreed Jim Watt is to be put out to pasture (also that numpty half assed clown without make-up McCrory) but not convinced that Woodhall is any better than either of them.

Even though I've heard Richie commentate fairly regularly, I have to agree that he's been very refreshing to hear at the Olympics. Very insightful and obviously knows the amateur game inside out. Love it when he loses it slightly when the GB lads are doing well.

He knows his onions all right..

But what lets him down is he gets stuck in a rut when he clearly favours and is a fan of one of the two boxers.

His bias shines through, which has a bad habit of colouring the action in his preferred man's favour.

As a pro boxing commentator I think he is good, but I do think he is a much better pundit than he is a commentator. I thought in the old days of boxing on the BBC him and Bunce were pretty good together, I could handle John Inverdale as the link man but the BBC bloke who does my nut in is Gary Richardson the one who interviewed the fighters on the ring apron post fight. He did not have a single clue about professional boxing at all and 99 times out of 100 was always trying to put the boxers performances down, or slag their opponent off, I remember Howard Eastman losing it with him once and saying 'so who should I fight? Can you name me 10 middleweights?' or words to that effect.

I like old Woody. I think Carl Froch when he retires will make a good commentator; he's very honest and speaks his mind about other boxers, whether they're his friends or not.

It's because he's honest; he's a Brit and boxed for Britain, knows all the GB team and cares; can't fault him; he's not reading the shipping forcast

His knowledge on the GB squad excellent because he was brought in a consultant by Robert McCracken after often oversees all the sparing when he is up in Sheffield, and I do agree I would like to see him on Sky more often rather than the odd appearance every so often on Ringside.

Richie is a great guy but he's got too many splinters in his arse for me :)

I remember him having Rees beating Kotelnik at the time of stoppage...very strange

Woodhall, as knowledgable as he is, has become a cheerleader. There is zero objectivity and no one to call him out when he starts ranting about his favoured fighter.

Get Steve Holdsworth on there, he always calls it as it is. Not knocking Woodhall overall as he is clearly one of the best guys on the British boxing scene but he just needs better verbal sparring to bring the best out of him. I'm sure he would enjoy that too.

Exactly..Once upon a time I thought he was 'company man' who would make sure his scorecard was close enough, so when the visitor got robbed he could say 'oh, it was close'. Now I just think he get's so excited and only sees the work that his man is doing........

He needs a foil like Holdsworth, to at least force him to be more objective. The clueless yes men just encourage him

Well lets be honest he SHOULD know everything there is to know about the GB team, being a focal point within it for a very long period.
We get back to the same issue.
Everybody wants him to tell it like it is, get off the fence etc but do you not realise but NOT doing that is precisely WHY he's got the job !
Same applies to all of them whichever media outlet they operate under.
Commentators can't say literally anything - they are scripted and have producers and editors giving them instructions through the ear piece.

Steve Holdsworth is flippin' ace and criminally underused. Him and that Ronald fellow would make a decent team. Jim McNeily and Woodhall are dire, if I am honest. Appallingly biased and blinkered if they favour one guy (which they do 99 times out of 100). The commentary of these 2 has seriously ruined any enjoyment I was experiencing watching it.

I find myself switching over to something else, it gets so bad. At least Ronald does tend to reign in Woodhall's bias as he does actually mention the 'other fighter' and his good work. I am sure Ritchie is a decent bloke, no doubt but commentating on the Olympic boxing was a bad choice. Including McNeily was probably worse.
