I recently made and edited a small video using content of a number of DVDs and used Adobe Premiere Pro C5.5. It's expensive (around £800) but does a good job (Avatar was edited using it). However only CS5.5 or above will work with VOB files (the file format of DVD) so older editions are largely useless for this jobs.

Alternatively there are a number of freeware programs which purport to work as DVD to MP4 or AVI converters, like this one -http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/ - don't know if its any good though.

For video I'm assuming you're referring to VHS. If so you could use a program like Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD - http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/easy- ... rview.html - to get it into digital format.

With regards to Adobe Premier (and the whole adobe suite) you can download a free trial version - and they let you pay per month - £70 per month for the whole adobe catalog
