Taping the gloves

Why has winding tape around the wrists of gloves become acceptable by the authorities and is now routine ?
The gloves are designed to lace up tightly and there is usually a cover for the laces and knots . We repeatedly see fights being halted by the referee to get pieces of tape removed ,and before this happens the boxers can be distracted .
I know full well why its done - to tighten the glove around the fist to make it seem more solid . I also notice that the tape is creeping further up away from the wrist on occasion thereby further tightening the glove around the fist . I can see no legitimate reason why ANY tape should be applied to the outside of the glove . Boxers have managed for almost 90 years before this practice became the norm .
I understand that some boxers used the inside of the wrist to rub the laces against partial cuts when in a clinch but gloves were designed so that a cover was pulled over the knotted laces .
When did this become acceptable ,why is it necessary ,and what can we do to end it ??

It's to stop potential "lacing" and the laces either untying or getting in the way, no?

Also, all taped gloves now, you will see a mark made by the State Athletic Commission's inspector.
There is a reason for that also.

not all gloves have a cover for the laces but putting tape on the outside should give more support to the wrist ?

As has been said its to stop laces coming un done and to stop potential injury from the knots and laces. Skinning as its called is the process of pulling the padding away from the front or knuckle part of the gloves by dragging the laces back towards the wrist gathering the wadding along the way the tape is then added to keep the laces in place. You can usually tell from the shape of the glove and the high tape line coming a good couple of inches forward of the wrist. This is also illegal. We could stop it in the UK by having an inspector in the dressing room for every boxer but this would mean greater expense for the board so its doubtful it will happen.

It would not be more expensive at all as inspectors give their time free of charge.

Inspectors roles are honourory and they receive bear recompense of 40p per mile travel expense if they wish to claim it. It would be more expensive as you would require more inspectors to watch the taping of every boxer on promotion. Some boxers would be taping at the same time regardless of the order.

Taping of the wrist part of the glove is for safety, to stop the laces coming undone and causing injury to the opponent, I even known some boxing trainers ask you to tape your fighters wrist area of the glove, even when they are not laced gloves at sparring sessions, in case the strap comes undone during the spar. with regards to the official signing the tape on the glove, this is only normally in title fights, where they check the hand wrapping and the gloves, though the ref does feel the gloves and check for lose tape, usually in the ring.

Having been an inspector ,it is a rule that all bandaging must be seen by the inspector and initialled prior to gloves going on . On some occasions there may have been two boxers in opposing dressing rooms being bandaged up at the same time . I have had on occasion to instruct bandages to come off . Not a popular decision granted , but its better than a horseshoe being shoved in !!!!!!
As regards the taping outside the gloves , I have to be honest and say thats seldom inspected, and when you see initials on this its only to signify that someone hasn't taken the gloves off and re-applied the hand bandages when the inspector has left the dressing room .

I was commenting on the watching of the hands being bandaged at title fights and I assumed when the ref checks the gloves in the ring, that he is also looking at the taping on the wrist of the glove, to make sure it is not loose.

I know what the role entails, in the Welsh area inspectors walk every boxer out and check their gloves prior to entering the ring, I do not know of any inspector that claims expenses on local shows.

we are talking about inspectors FFS, the people who give their time free of charge, I don't know of one that has been put up in a 4 star hotel. Most don't even claim their fuel back ( which they are entitled to) they are at the venue hours before the show starts to do the weigh in and usually the last to leave.
This just shows how clueless you are

Ahhh, Welsh area inspectors :) Are Mr Corp and Mr Carroll still knocking about? I do not know of any inspector who doesn't claim expenses, and I don't blame them either. One of the most overlooked and thankless roles in the pro game. Without them pro boxing would be screwed.

Thank you Jon, the guy is having a pop at people who give up their time free of charge and usually out of pocket.

They are still about yes, Harry has had some health problems but seems to be getting over them thank goodness. Like I said no expenses are claimed to my knowledge and Harry and Dai have even caught buses from Cardiff to Newport even at their age and with health problems.

You just don't have a clue what goes on but quick enough to have a pop at the BBBoC, if you're quick enough you can jump on one of the band wagons
