Interesting question, as weight issues play a crucial part in a boxer's life.

There are many different methods of weight reduction of which are widely used by boxers today, despite many of them being dangerous:

drying out (involves cutting out fluids from the diet to lose weight. This is dangerous; definitely not advised. Has resulted in many boxers being seriously injured or worse in a fight.

cutting carbohydrates (brings your weight down quickly. However, your body needs carbohydrates as a fuel source.....more so for boxers who use up a tremendoes amount of energy). Not advised.

The best and safest way to lose weight before a fight is to count your total calorie intake, and eat less calories than what you burn in training. However, it is advised that this is done many weeks leading up to a fight.....you should look at marginal weight loss per week. Don't crash diet! Make sure you eat enough protein, carbohydrates and fat, and that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. I personally supplement my diet with multivitamins to ensure that my body gets all of the nutrients that it requires.

Yes Dean my diet is this....Morning 4 weetabix with skimmed milk plus 3 vit tablets

Plus 2 litre of water sipped through the day and only something small for tes.
I wanted to ask what the danger was of running with a bin linner on to increase sweat as i have heard many folks say this before
?
Saying that this is the first time i have tried this diet b4 i just boxed at what i weighed really i am now going to try and find my true weight

Jacko11,
Dean is exactly right, and I'd advise you to listen to sportsmen and other people in good shape rather than fatties at dieting sites who are normally of the lazy excuse making variety. Remember you can't argue with science.

I don't know what you know already but this is what you need to do:

Calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR)
Basically the amount of calories you need to tick over.
The easiest way to get a fairly accurate answer is to multiply your current weight (in pounds) by 10.

e.g. Let's say you're 10 stone/140lbs

10 x 140 = 1400 calories

Then you must add the additional calories your daily activity will burn up. You can calculate this very accurately with the calculator here http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calories.htm

Alternatively to give you a fairly accurate idea:

Select which of these applies to you-

1) Not very active. Couch potato, who does very little walking about. ADD 20%

2) Lightly active. Sit down most of the day, but do a few hours walking about every day. ADD 30%

3) Moderately active. Physically active job or participation in regular (3-4 per week) training sessions. ADD 40%

4) very active. Physically active job, and/or Regular INTENSE phsical training ADD 50%

e.g. Let's say you're moderately active.

BMR of 1400 cals + 40% = 1960 calories per day.

Basically (for our 10 stone example) all you have to do then is consume fewer than 1960 cals a day to lose weight, more than 1960 cals to gain weight and exactly 1960 to maintain the weight you are.

Finally there are approx 4500 calories to one pound of fat.

If our 10 stone moderately active example needs:

1960 cals a day/13,720 cals a week to maintain his bodyweight and he were to only consume 9221 cals in the week, he would lose one pound of bodyweight.

That's the basics, mate.

When you train, the weight you lose during that session is made up entirely of body liquids, as well as vital body chemicals such as potassium (which is why you see tennis players nibbling a banana in between games; bananas are high in potassium). You would need to replace these liquids as soon as possible after training, so the idea of wearing a bin liner is not really helpful. It would dehydrate you, similar to using a sauna to sweat off pounds.

If anyone is interested, a typical day's diet for me:

Breakfast: muesli or porridge, skimmed milk, whey protein concentrate or boiled eggs, multivitamin supplement.

Mid-morn: Salmon sandwich (no spread, and wholemeal bread), tomato, apple.

Lunch: Chicken breast, brown pasta or rice, mixed veg or salad.

Before training: Yoghurt, banana.

During and after training: Isotonic drink.

Dinner: Potato/rice, Cod fillet/steak, mixed veg or salad, multimvitamin supplement.

I drink water regularly throughout the day.

:D It's a joke, erlene. Perhaps English isn't your first language? That would explain why you don't get it.

Look at the word: DIETING

Now seperate the first 3 letters from the final 4, what do you get?

DIE and TING

Eric is pretending that he has no idea what the word "DIETING" means. Do you understand now?

What do you mean, "pretending"? I still don't get it. Is this some sort of anti-Chinese thing going on here? And why is "erlene" swearing at me now? Can't we all just get along?

I wonder how Luis Villalta (the fighter who has just died) lost his weight for the fight? Pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be at all surprised it it involed "Drying Out." With less fluid around your brain, helping to protect it, you are putting yourself at great risk if you rely on that method for making weight.

Luis Villalta R.I.P.

Very true, and also increases the risk of dehydration.
