Mayweather still a bad boy outside the ring

A bar fight could result in assault charges against boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather earns millions of dollars when he's in the ring, but it's fights outside of it that are getting him in trouble with police from Grand Rapids to Las Vegas.
Mayweather has a history of assault and could face charges again in his hometown of Grand Rapids.
"People feel above the law in situations like that," said William Morris.
Morris is a 26-year-old bouncer at The Radio Tavern in Grand Rapids. He says an encounter with Mayweather and his entourage landed him in the hospital on December 18. Morris claims they punched, kicked and beat him with bottles and chairs that night.
"They basically treated him like a dog," said Stephen Grimm, Morris' attorney.
As his client explains it, problems started while Mayweather and a dozen people with him were playing billiards at the bar. Morris said he went over to the pool area to settle a fight between two women. But Mayweather's entourage intervened and things got ugly. Morris said it started with a punch to the back of his head and then the side of his face.
"I turn around again and I see a Corona bottle. I don't know who's swinging it. I duck back and trip over the corner of a bar stool and the next thing I know I'm on the ground getting kicked, hit with objects I found out later were chairs. Floyd Mayweather was kicking me," said Morris.
"I physically put my hands on the bar and leaned over and noticed it was Will. He was physically getting beaten up at the time," said Brad Lapchak, the bar manager.
Afterward, Morris said he was a bloody mess. He received 14 staples in his head and suffered bruises on his back and sides.
This is not the first time, according to court records, Mayweather has been accused of assault. Tracking down records in Las Vegas where Mayweather lives, court clerks say he racked up five misdemeanor charges over the past three years alone. All of the charges are assault type cases ranging from simple battery to domestic violence. A few of the cases are still open, with Mayweather scheduled to appear in court this month.
In addition to Mayweather's five misdemeanor cases, at least four more were dismissed. Las Vegas police say in some of those cases, the victim refused to cooperate with prosecutors.
Grand Rapids Police say if the Kent County prosecutor decides to issue charges in this recent incident, Mayweather could face aggravated assault, or assault and battery. One of the men with him that is believed to have used a bottle to hit Morris, could face felonious assault. Authorities are still looking to identify a third person. Police say they will forward their report to the prosecutor next week.
Mayweather's Grand Rapids attorney, William Mills, says neither he nor his client have anything to say about the situation. But he did say that Mayweather told him he had never even met the victim, William Morris. Morris disputes that and says the two were actually classmates at Iroquois Middle School. While they weren't good friends, Morris says they knew each other by name and never had any bad blood.
