One of my favourite fighters has announced his retirement from boxing today. Ryan Rhodes has finally decided to call it a day and leave the ring for good. Not a total suprise considering the outcome of his last fight, but none the less, it's a little sad and i will miss watching Ryan fight having followed him all his career. Ryan seemed to be one of those fighters that just fell short of being a truely world class fighter. He could compete at that level and of course he fell short at his three attempts at gaining a world title, but Ryan was more of a european level fighter.

Great early promise to his career fell away to some bad losses later on, followed by some notable injury problems, only to see a late flourish to a career that can be seem overall as one to be very proud of. Ryan took Otis Grant all the way in a close fight for his first title tilt, lost to Gary Locket in his second and came up against the formidable Alvarez in his third and final world title challenge. Ryan was a solid professional, nice bloke and i enjoyed watching him and i am sad that i never got to see him win a world title. I wish Ryan all the very best in his retirement and i'm sure he will go on to do good things with his life and his family around him. I hope he stays in boxing in some capacity.

Thanks for the memories Ryan, top bloke, good professional, well respected in the game and you carved out a long boxing career of which you can be very proud. Boxing and Sheffield boxing will miss Ryan Rhodes.

Been at the press Conferance very emotional and so sad to say farewell to a British boxing legend just wish he would have won the big one he so deserved

He was in some cracking fights and as you say British boxing legend.

sad to see but I am sure he knew in his own mind of the time is right

I'm proud to say I was there when he had what i think was his biggest win, in possibly his best fight, the superb war with Jamie Moore.

Fantastic comeback when everyone thought he was finished after the Blundell loss. Slowly building up his confidence again and got it back imo in his loss to Lockett which led to him retaining his British title and getting the world shot. Took him a few years but his perseverance is definitely something to be proud of.

Wasn't Jason Matthews his second?

I think the first fight of his I saw live was the Szabo one. Saw his last fight and a few in-between, including the Moore one.

It was, i was there at The Donny Dome, Ricky was on the undercard.

Only joking its good to see you back on the board, and being a Sheffield lad meself i'm proud of Ryan equally for the way he acts on top of how he fought. Top lad and a good solid fighter, Spice boy will be missed!!

It's been an emotional time but now the announcement's made he can begin to plan for the next chapters in his life.
30 years in boxing is a long, long, time.
Inevitably there have been highs and lows. Enjoy the highs I say, and utilise the lows as part of the learning experience.
The aim when he went to work with Dave Coldwell was to prove a few wrong and get back in the mix at British level.
I think it safe to say he far and away exceeded that, winning the British title again - 11 years after the first time, winning the WBC International and winning the EBU title.
A great servant to British boxing.
So proud of you Ry.

He has had a career that he can be very proud of:

Youngest ever Londsale winner, 2 x british light middleweight champion and European Champion. Great stuff.

He is one of my favourite british boxers and a really nice bloke to go along with his talent. I hope he stays involved with the game nd whatever he had planned next goes really well for him.

26- what would Ryan say was the highest of the high points?

The Jamie Moore fight mate.
So many had written him off - "glass chin etc" but to go to war with Jamie and prevail was special. That's if you put him on the spot mate, but also his experiences at World level in particular in Mexico.
My choice is a weird one but it's his fight against Szabo. The comeback after the Grant fight. So many doubts had crept in about himself but he put on an accomplished show and stopped him with a great body shot.
A real rollercoaster its been and what a ride !

I still read occasionally on the site, but haven't answered or put up a post for ages........

I will forever support any of the lads from Sheffield regardless of the gym they emanate from.
However I don't think I could ever get involved again to the extent I did (and will continue to do) with Ryan.

It was a classy thing Dave Coldwell did today - inviting a few of the press for a sit down to give Ryan a chance to announce his retirement properly rather than it leaking or being done in public or off the back of a show.

A classy thing for a classy guy in Ryan Rhodes.

I think if he'd had a couple more fights in a higher class he'd of beaten Grant. He had 4 fights in the year lead up, but not taken into the later rounds to get that tough experience.
