Just a bit of curiosity as i see more and more lads turning pro from the unlicensed circuit nowdays , just wondering who we know of that boxed on those shows .

Johnny Greaves has said on here that he used to do so , a few i know that have gone from unlicensed circuit are Marvyn Greaves (who posts on here occasionally ) ,Roger Brotherhood , Ashley Mayall , Nathan McIntosh , Gary Johnson ,Nicky Furness , Scott Moonan and Terry Maughan , thats just off the top of my head , there will be countless others , i just think its becoming more frequent now than ever before

And obviously theres a fair few who dropped into unlicensed afterward too .

Edit : this isnt a debate of how good unlicensed is or isnt , just a simple question , none of those i listed above have acheived a great deal yet , and maybe never will but just as a quick point of reference / interest .

The young middleweight nick blackwell sure he boxed on unlicenced got a few stoppages on the circuit i think too, but looks a tiny middleweight in the pros,

Mark Potter and Dom Negus are too locals to me who turned to unlicenced... Potter KO'd Butterbean!

Lee Purdy, i think.

Wayne hibbert from Horndon. He used to get a good crowd down the circus tavern

Kris Agyia-Dua fighting for Southern Area Light-Middle this weekend started on Mortlock Tavern Un-Licensed circuitt

Ian cooper craig Denton went from pro to un licence and both do well un beaten at it coopers won few belts but went in a u f c thing and end up hurt with a blood clot

I read somewhere that Luke Blackledge did.

Im informed today that our very own Jeff Thomas used to box on the EBF shows in the Nort West , didnt realise that and in fact i thought he was a bit anti unlicensed from some things ive read .

I boxed on two- one was a carry job for a pal and the other was my first fight in 3 years apparently I got beat... Well at least according to the ambulance driver (who'd 'never being to a boxing match before') and the other guys pal/trainer. When I watched the video he never hit me in the fight.

But had I won I possibly would have carried on wasting my time going nowhere on that circuit. That's my critism of it- there are too many carry jobs and too many ridiculous matches for it to hold any credibility with me. I like spencer brown who runs it he's a good guy and brings over some top American fighters but it's all about the money and there is very little in the way of quality.

Don't get me wrong there's some good pro's on the circuit but of your good enough box amateur or turn pro. Why waste your time fighting on something where there is no quality control and no progression.

The shows are great to attend though and professional boxing could learn a lot from the entertainment they provide. I'd venture that their attendances far outweigh many pro shows.

Good luck to them but if someone comes to me and says 'ive had x amount of fights on the unlicensed circuit' I can't help but think why have you gone down that route? The gyms tend to produce fundamentaly poor boxers too as the trainers haven't completed courses or have being guided how to coach properly as per the bbbc courses and aba coaching badges.

Blackwell and Purdy are probably the most successful that I know of. I mentioned to Danny Flexen the other day about this as a potential article for BN and BM and he reckons its a great idea however he thought i should pen it :-/

I understand your points mate , you can only go on experience you have had , although it is changing for the better , im not going to write a big essay as i said this thread isnt about that , but i can assure you no one does "carry jobs on my shows" nor have i ever provided a boxer to do so anywhere else , not saying it doesnt happen as i have been asked once or twice but usually seems to be to protect big ticket selling heavyweights , the lighter lads seem to have a bit more bottle about them .

and i cant comment on standing of coaching either for others as our lads have pro standard coaching , coaches who had been pro in past etc , but i can only vouch for the Nottingham lads , i know a few other gyms we use across the country that i think have proper coaching etc but id guess for every gym that is doing it the right way youll have 2 or 3 that are poor .
