Tapia lost last night
Featherweight Frankie Archuleta scored an upset split decision over five-time champion former world champion Johnny Tapia Friday night at the Highlands University Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It was a very close and competitive fight with many good exchanges. Two of the three judges preferred the local hero Archuleta's work from the outside over Tapia's aggressiveness. Archuleta moves to 23-4-1 with 13 KOs with the win, while Tapia falls to 53-4-2 with 28 KOs. Earlier, unbeaten super bantamweight Cuahtemoc Vargas pounded out a lopsided eight round decision over faded former IBF flyweight champion Isidro Tejedor. Vargas (11-0, 8 KOs) stalked Tejedor (46-20-1 31) the entire fight, winning 79-73 on all cards. (More to come)
