Who are fighters who went off the cliff after they retired that were surprising?
Who were fighters who turned out to be all right whom you thought wouldn't be?
Examples:
Rocky Lockridge: Made good money; very articulate; nice family. I saw the episode of "Intervention" on A&E. Sad. Just sad.
Aaron Pryor: His drug issues were known before he retired for good. Now, he's a minister.
Holyfield: Never thought he'd turn into what he has. Should've bought some condoms.
Saad Muhammad: Heard he wasn't doing too well, though I hope that's wrong. Someone else who made a lot of money and had such an inspiring story.
Michael Nunn: From having a bunch of celebrity friends to doing 24 years in federal prison.

Vinnie the Chin? His crazy act got a lot of attention here in the U.S. Sammy the Bull testified against him at his trial; finally got convicted. He claimed that the feds put a transmitter into his ass during an operation.

Great story even though you had heard it. Iwao Hakamada has had a messed up time since he stopped fighting.

Meldrick Taylor.....last I heard he is punchy now and standing on street corners preaching.
It is a shame how many great boxers end up punchy. The question is how many do not end up punchy?

To answer my own question...Mark Breland who had a great amateur career and pretty good pro career seems to be doing good now and working as a trainer. I'e seen Jake LaMotta at a boxing function and he did some pretty good stand up comedy. I also met Boom Boom Mancini and he seemed in good shape but that was back in the late 80's early 90's. I hope is still doing well. Gene Fullmer is doing OK, he owns the Rocky Mountain Golden Glove franchise in Utah and tells some funny jokes about boxing Ray Robinson.

Suprisingly, George Foreman doesn't appear to be punchy at all. Funny thing is he fought a lot of the same guys Ali did and had a second career taking punishment from guys like Briggs, Morrison, and Holyfield.

And who would ever believe that Jake Lamotta would still be around?

How about fighters that do unexpected good things after boxing like Holmes? He has done very well in business without the benefit of basic schooling.

They've had Mancini on ESPN Classic many times; there was a documentary made about the Kim fight, and he sounded just fine. He's acting and producing films.

He was punchy on HBO's Legendary Nights in 2003. Isn't he a member of some fringe sect now?

Gene Tunney is a prime example of success after boxing. became a millionaire

For sure. He picked the right flower too marrying into The Carnegie family.

Nigel Benn- A man who did very good things with his money and owns 20 properties and is a minister with holiday homes in Spain where he stil trains and keeps in shape. He retired at 32 and never needed to come back.

Herbie Hide- Despite his somewhat limited but lengthy career and countless situations when he has been emroiled in and around legal problems, has a fighter ever maximised a single payday like hide did with his $5 million or so he says he got for Bowe?? He bought a mansion in Norfolk and a Vegas home which he still owns .

Chris Eubanks- Acted like he was smarter than other boxers, but Benn and Hide never went bankrupt.

Bobby Cyzyz- He had all the breaks after his career ended but threw his commentating career away with drink

And yes, Bowe is punchy; he sounded horrible in 2003 on the HBO Legendary Nights series on the Bowe/Golota episode.

Wow I didn't know about Rocky, just seen a clip on YouTube with him living rough on the streets, sad, he was a good fighter.

Ben Villaflor is the Sergeant at Arms for the Hawaii Senate and was appointed to the boxing commission. Glad he's doing well.
