Just going thru the results over the weekend and saw in the UK that a guy got beat on the weekend with a record of 13wins and 122 losses!!! he has won 2 yes 2 of he's last 60 odd fights? am i missing something here???? Billy "gypsy boy" Smith..

i noticed that of his 123 losses he has only been stopped 8 times. that's quite incredible and probably has something to do with it.
just going back thru his record, he has on a few occassions fought 4 times per month.

Also, check out peter buckley won 32 (KO 8 ) + lost 256 (KO 10) + drawn 12 = 300.
stopped 10 times in 256 losses.

And theres reggie strickland won 66 (KO 14) + lost 276 (KO 25) + drawn 17 = 363. - He fought 18 times in 2004!!

These guys may amass many losses, but they rarely get stopped

unbevable!!! thanks for replying! i did notice that he only been stopped 8 times! sheeesh so when he fights they mostly go the distance! lol... i reckon that worse in a way!!!!

we all phuk up sometimes i suppose.

Every aussie and his neighbour (excuse the pun) has an English reli, maybe he was looking at it from that angle.

Billy's an excellent journeyman and he's saved many a show by stepping in at late notice. He even held an area title a few years back. As bad as his record is he's one of the toughest fighters around having gone the distance with many future champions.

I would bet he would have trouble taking out life insurance.

27 fights 27 wins yet only a couple of fighters have lost to him, a mathematical anomaly.

Unfortunately these sorts of guys are the ones most likely to end up permanently damaged. They do huge numbers of rounds getting beat up for the full duration of almost each and every round. Sad that they are allowed to do it to themselves.

I asked the question on a thread earlier in the year Re UK based fighters, alot of the professional bouts there seem to go the distance if you look through most of there records you find they dont have alot of stoppage wins and same for there losses not often are they stopped. Compared to the rest of the world for exmaple. Any ideas?

I mean there are the obvious guys like Haye who has a very good KO % and a few others similar to him of course but generally they KO %'s there are low?

Mate theres guys out there with worse records than him in the UK still getting between the ropes, he can obviously fight a bit to be going the distance with ALOT of guys. But my main question is if he's only won 3 fights but lost 80 only 5 of which have been via stoppage he cant be THAT bad? I mean hes gone the long route 75times in losing efforts? this is most common though out the UK correct me if im wrong@!

I agree, taking punishment over even 4 and 6 rounds is damaging considering some of these guys are having over 100 professional bouts.

Exactly the point I was making above

These journey man fighters are very crafty & don't cop as much punishment as people think they keep the sport alive, not everyone can be a world champ.

I would imagine the majority of them do have day jobs but for the busier Journeymen it could provide their main source of income.

We missed out Sid Razak. won 8 (KO 3) + lost 98 (KO 4) + drawn 0. I like Sid. Has a look in the first round then I think he knows if he capable from then on.

delroy spencer has got to be the youngest looking 44 year old boxer. won 14 (KO 1) + lost 143 (KO 13) + drawn 3

Ken Carmody had 145 fights between 1966 and 1978, starting as a bantamweight and finishing up as a welterweight, with 36 wins, 89 losses and 19 draws. He died in 1982.

I knew Ken from Bernie Hall's gym, but every time we saw each other away from there he felt he had to tell me who he was. It was obvious from the early 1970s that it was taking its toll on him.

IF you have had over 100 professional bouts theres no doubt no matter how crafty you how much of a defensive master you are it will start to take its toll. These guys in my opinion are just as much legends of the sport as the Hearns, Haglers, Durans, Ali's etc for without them we'd not have the previously mentioned guys.

Going by there KO % in losses they are not diving or dogging fights either if if they realise they are out gunned it looks as though they are at least trying to remain upright!

...and they are usually left to die broke.
