I know he announced his retirement shortly after the Haye defeat, but just wondered if there was any rumors of a comeback ?
Just seemed to vanish ! He wasn't that old was he ?
Also supprised he never thought one or both of the klitscho's !

I'd imagine that Bernd Boente found a way to make him an offer he couldn't accept. And for anyone saying Valuev got offered several million, I'd say that if the offer didn't have shit loads of the Klitschko's usual caveats added in to that offer it would probably have been accepted.

Due to his genetic condition, doesn't he have some sort of ongoing issue with his bones? His shoulder specifically? I thought that's why he retired.

I didn't hear anything and haven't found anything since. There was talk that it was because he was hunting for the Yeti and also talk of surgery, but I never found anything concrete. The fact that he hasn't fough since might indicate that it was sometthing to do with his health concerns. But like I said, you'll have to ask him.

He had an operation on his arm soon after Haye. Think he had bad back trouble too. Better to get out rather than be forced out. Isn't he in Parliament now?

For a man so huge, Valuev's lack of punch power always utterly amazed me. He seemed totally feather fisted and I can never remember him actually knocking someone clean out.

I think his main/only asset was his size Steve. Just because you are big doesn't always mean you can punch hard. He was not a natural athlete or boxer. Just massive, and anyone that big is hard to hit or get near to without getting countered. Also he was in a division at probably the weakest point in HW history. Once a good boxer got in the ring with him to nulfy his height (David Haye) then he was never going to win. If Haye was the same height as Valuev then it wouldn't last more than 3 rounds!

I agree that his size was his only real asset but if someone who weighs 23 stone punches with correct technique, biologically/physiologically he should be able to crack with real power. I appreciate that his technique was probably the problem but nevertheless...

Valuev's hand were far too slow for him to be considered a power puncher.

I would imagine due to his obvious acromegaly that his joints simply couldn't handle the stress of prize fighting. When he first started fighting he didn't wear knee pads, etc. Near the end he was as mobile as a skyscraper. I think in alot of ways he was better than what critics said of him, but because of his size it was hard to not look at him as a novelty. That being said, imho, I think Ruiz and Holyfield did beat him.

I thought he got a hard time considering the lack of talent in the division generally. Massive size advantage which turned out to be a hinderance for him. Neat boxing skills, not outstanding, but neat.

Holyfield beat him easily, man.

he was/is an average fighter who made the most of his physique, this took him to world championship level and made him a pocketful of dough. well done Nikolai... you batted above your average. a bit like carlos wigan/fat git and the bird he 'trombones'....
