I am hearing from the local rag that James Degale will be fighting in Hull next.

Be good to see a top fighter in Hull for once.

Fighting in hull??? Maybe it is cheap to hire a venu in Hull, Well if that's the case, it looks like he has made a bad decision re his promoter, Hull!!!! Sounds like he is attracted to fish, he should be billed and made into a star in his home town!!! Why the fk did he go down the Hennessey route, he was free of his chains, who is managing this Kid's career! , He should have gone the Eddie Hearn route, Builds them at home, Massive with sky, Are these fighters Blind!! You only have to look at froch, he left Hennessey for better pastures, Why not cut the middle man out and stop wasting time and follow Froch, in boxing time can pass you by and then it's too late,

Don't underestimate the value of terrestrial television exposure. Also Degale is never going to build a huge, loyal, local following. That would be the case whoever was promoting him.

Bit harsh that mate.

Froch may have ended his relationship with Hennessey on bad terms and no doubt he's made a good move to Hearn BUT i was told what he earned for the Super Sixes per fight and it was SERIOUS money mate.

Look at someone like Kid Galahad, who we both know Eddie would sign tomorrow if he could - is he better off on FIVE making good money in front of 1m plus people or wld he better off stuck on a big undercard?

That's not a criticism of Eddie at all - he has done a fabulous job with Kell, absolutely superb - but i don't think that just coz someone likes Eddie Hearn means they have to have a pop at all the other promoters.

Also, there's a limit to how many stars Eddie can ever have in his stable because he has a finite number of big Sky dates to work with. He probably doesn't need many more than he's got (though I'm sure like everyone else he'd move heaven and earth to get his hands on Anthony Joshua) ...

Unfair. Mick had Froch on the BBC for this first part of his career and then Sky and then delivered a WBC title shot to Carl live on ITV1. Mick did a good job with Froch and the exposure he got him on terrestial TV was impressive.

Eddie Hearn isn't always the answer, like going to Freddie Roach as a new trainer doesn't always work.

Well how come froch was not a major star in the uk (when with hennessey) Terrestial tv and massive exposure, every one on these forum's agree he has fought the best fighters of any boxer in britain today, something was not right?

It doesn't necessarily mean that anyone is to blame; Froch is carving a great career and reputation and his popularity is improving. there have been some marvelous boxers who have fought very hard opposition and never really been known to the general sports fan or the wider public. Some people have more luck in that area or just have the personality that fits the times that they live in. The television set up didn't favour Hennesseys boxers and the recession seemed to hit the budgets for sport. Froch did the best thing for himself and his career, he seems a very intelligent man and is very focussed - he must have liked what he saw in Hennessey when he signed and he stayed for some time; good times and not so good. Eddie Hearn has the whip hand in UK boxing and has the chance to do very well for himself and boxing; not everyone will want to work with him though and his approach and way of working may not suit some temperaments. There will always be a distorted and skewed market in boxing but I feel the more independent managers and promoters the better and the more choice there is for the boxers.

DeGale? I dont care.

Froch was really made by Meaty Mick Promotion, anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

You know what I meant. Meaty Mick got him in the SUper 6, yes he messed up on certain things, but MM got him there.

He had good support and a very good trainer; he had stability and a plan and a stable of young and ambitious boxers with him. Froch has done the fighting and the hard training himself but there will have been a lot of hard work done behind the scenes to keep headaches, inconveniences and distractions to a minimum; Froch doesn't seem the sort of man to tolerate fools or people around him who were not up to the job; I remember reading an interview with Froch where he said that when he was well known as a boxer he could negotiate for himself and had no need to pay a promoter. I can imagine that many of us would do the same and would also be honest to accept and admit that a lot of work was done to get 'us' from being not well known to being 'very' well known and able to work out payment and timetables from television executives.

Campbell drew a massive crowd in Hull when he came back with the gold medal; I haven’t heard anything but could he turn pro on the undercard? With two Olympic champions on the same bill it would likely be a solid draw. If Campbell isn’t turning pro then I suspect local favourite Tommy Coyle might be stepping up (though I have no idea who Coyle is promotional tied to). Another Brucey bonus is that as mentioned you could probably get a good deal on the venue. I have to say that while not traditionally a boxing city, the emergence of Campbell, Coyle, Woodhouse and Mouneimne has really upped the interest in boxing in the city. Plus we had our first decent gig in years last week with Ed Sheeran and that sold out. So maybe Mick views Hull as a city on the rise. Either way it speaks badly of Degales ability to draw a crowd.

To be fair, when you look at the boxers who have been most popular not only do they have the personable nature, they are also willing to put themselves out and about.

Although I am a big admirer of Froch I am not sure that he has that crossover personality appeal or is even happy to go to the opening of envelopes etc to get himself publicity.

A couple of the arenas Meaty Mick has set up since having his stable on Five have been a bit weird.

Why did Tyson Fury compete in Somerset, for example? He lives in Manchester. I can understand him fighting in Ireland. He's half-Irish and draws there.

I thought fighting in Bluewater in Kent was a bit random as well.

It may be random but where's the harm? If you live off the beaten track you get the chance to see a (pretty) famous fighter without shelling out loads on travel and hotels etc. For the boxers - I can imagine it is a bit of a buzz to go to the smaller places and perform; even if they never hit the very big time and the big money there's a lot of memories being made; the old tim fighters (pre television) would box all over the place.

I agree, what's wrong with traveling the country as long as you put on a show you may well gain a few fans extra and like you say it gives people who may not be able to afford a large train fare and hotel expense the opportunity to see a decent fighter in the flesh

Hennessy definately did a good job early in Froch's career (and throughout his entire time with Froch in my opinion) there were a hell of a lot of very late pullouts of opponents in Froch's early career and the way Hennessy pulled good opponents out the bag so late was really impressive. Froch had Tony Dodson pull out really late several times and Hennessy managed to get Froch a Commonwealth title fight against Charles Adamu and a defence against Mark Woolnough. Now people may not have heard of Woolnough at the time but he actually proved to be anything but a knockover job. And now we have seen this week with Fury. Boytsov pulls out and Kevin Johnson is brought in as the replacement. When Boytsov pulled out I was thinking 'great, Rob Calloway will be brought in as the replacement' but to get Johnson in was impressive.

If Degale is fighting in Hull, I say so what. It's on channel 5 which will give him far more exposure than fighting at the 02 arena on a pay to view channel.
