WBO Light Heavyweight Rankings - Hawk 'appears' at 15

does anyone know when the WBO rankings come out each month?

i have this little mystery that I'm keen to solve.

it goes like this:

when Shawn Hawk was announced as Clev's opponent, I tweeted on the same day that he wasnt ranked by the WBO and how could the WBO sanction the fight because they themselves had said that unless the opponent was top 15 it wouldnt be a title fight.

the number 15 fighter at the time (5th nov) was Eleider Alvarez who beat Hawk in Hawk's previous outing.

now...today I went back to look at the rankings again and guess what.

the October rankings which say they are dated 15th October have Bellew gone, Eleider Alvarez up to 14 and guess who in at number 15!!

yep. Hawk.

now my little conundrum is that I'm pretty sure that when I checked the rankings on 5th November it said they were the October rankings.

which would mean that they've been retrospectively 'updated'.

but i dont have a copy of the pdf from the 5th November so I can't be 100% sure.

but i cant think of any reason why as at 15th October Hawk would be ranked 15th when he wasnt ranked in the september rankings at all and nothing happened in between. and as at 15th October, Coyne was still the expected opposition for Cleverly.

anyone find this a little puzzling?

It's pretty shocking behaviour, but not surprising. These Sanctioning bodies suck.

If you check the properties of the October Rankings PDF, it says it was created at 14.20 November 5th ;;-)

Also, you are right that he wasn't in the rankings in Sept, here's that PDF: http://www.wboboxing.com/wp-content/pdf ... t_2012.pdf

i'm guessing that was 14:20 puerto rico time which would make it quite late over here....probably after i checked it.

just wish i had downloaded the version i was looking at so i could be sure it was october rankings "pre" november 5th update.

I'd expect so yes. There was a PDF called WBO_Ranking_as_of_Sept_2012_1.pdf which I thought may have been the original but it was the same. Nearly caught them out!

Pretty sure the WBO claimed they were last updated "October 15"...

That is what I said on another thread regarding Ryan Coyne. Though it's directly applied to Hawk.

I looked on their rankings 2 weeks ago. Shawn Hawk wasn't in there for October. They edited their October list and put him in at #15 which is fornicating ridiculous. They waited until the November rankings were out before they edited Octobers. Hoping nobody would notice. Everyone knew they were going to do this. Many of us posted about Ryan Coyne jumping to #15 (which he would have, if Hawk wasn't substituted in).

The WBO manipulate their own ranking system when ever they want. To accommodate certain individual fights. They're one of the biggest jokes of boxing.

He wasn't in the ratings at the time the fight was announced. I did a story on it. They just do what the f**k they like.

What really annoyed me was the complete lack of reporting on this in the general media. They talk about Clev defending his world title, etc. but with no mention of the fact that the contest shouldn't be happening.

now the actual November rankings are out and look what happened...

Hawk disappears.

Eleider Alvarez drops back down to 15 and the spot that Bellew had and Alvarez got bumped up to to make way for Hawk AFTER he got announced has been filled by

Vikapta Meroro - a namibian, ranked here 90th in the world, who earned the right to go demote Alvarez by beating fellow namibian Edmos Takawira who is 0-11. both fighters weight around 180lbs.

now..i've downloaded the november rankings.

keep your eyes peeled on the 135lb division. Walsh is still ranked. my punt is that before the december rankings come out, the november rankings will be updated, walsh will drop and whoever ends up being burns opponent will sneak onto the list at 15, until the december rankings where they will disappear.

If they did that, they wouldn't get their free lunch and drinks though. Sports reporters love a trip to the boxing

Why are we surprised?

I didn't watch the fight and doubt I will see any of the footage of it either. The whole thing can be summed up with the coverage in the media which focused on how Clev had Tom Jones supporting him...

Is there a thread on how Yusaf Mack got a title shot after not fighting at 168lbs in over five years? A KO loss to Librado Andrade at that.

Mack was ranked 5 by the IBF in the division above. so he was technically ranked by the governing body and at a bigger weight. he didnt need a kansas city shuffle in order for the sanctioning body to legitimise their own edict that unless the opponent was on their radar they wouldnt allow it to be a title fight. and they wouldnt have got their cut.
this is about the WBO's shenanigans. its not about matchroom v FWP/QP so perhaps you should go find another tree to bark up pickle.

In the meantime he had won an IBF light heavyweight title eliminator and subsequently lost in his challenge for that very belt against Cloud.

He was rated at no 5 in the IBF light heavyweight rankings before moving down to face Froch for the super middle IBF title.

Was he rated in the IBF top 15 at 168? Froch is the Champ at Super Middle so Mack being rated in another weight class means nothing.
Hawk getting the title shot was a load of bollocks just the same as Mack getting one. That doesn't fit this threads agenda though, right?

I wonder if Yusaf Mack will enter the 168 rankings when they are next released?
