Does anyone have any info on birmingham trainer Nobby Nobbs.
I went to his gym in a very rough part of Brum in 2002 and he was a right character.
Told me how to warm up - go and stand by the radiator!
Put me in to spar with Peter Buckley and Tony Hanna. Happy but very painful memories.
Apparently he just upped stix and disappeared off the scene circa 2008.

Sounds just like Nobby the last I heard he was working in Birmingham wholesale market part time as he had done for many years but that was about 2 or 3 years ago The Landlord evicted him from his Gym and he stored all his gear in a unit at the Market and he said he was looking for a new gym but then he just walked away from the sport altogether I remember his Gym at the Telson Centre just off Aston Expressway and yes it was an experience for sure, you had to wipe your feet on the way out Nobby was a great character and he had some good boxers in his stable who even though they were journeymen were as tough as iron and could be relied upon to go the distance with anybody and obviously the best of the lot was Peter Buckley who had 300 fights others I recall were Brian coleman,Arv Mittoo Howard Clarke Hastings Rasani Tony Hanna Karl Taylor and loads more

One thing nobby could teach was how to defend and how to survive, if all boxers learnt from nobby they would learn how to survive when hurt, how to slip punches, when to spoil etc etc, nobby was a master at what he taught.

Ha ha When Amir first turned Pro Nobby told him that he should sign with him and he would soon ensure that he made enough to buy a corner shop and thats a true story Thats the sort of character Nobby was lol

I remember fighting Tony Randall who Nobby had at the time and Nobby was shouting instructions to me like use my jab more it's working my head was falling off only my 2nd pro fight and he was making me piss whilst fighting

I was at Tonys debut fight against Scott Conway at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens Tony was a good fighter and a nice guy

Nobby was one of the cornerstones of the British fight game. As stated earlier, all his fighters knew how to look after themselves in there and often took bouts at very short notice. They knew their job but could give it a go and make life difficult for a prospect when they had to. It was nice to see back in March 1999 when Howard Clarke got a title shot against IBF light-middleweight champion Fernando Vargas on the Lewis v Holyfield show at Madison Square Garden. OK, Howard had zero chance of winning and really didn't earn his place there but he fulfilled every boxer's dream I guess.

Would Nobby ever come back to boxing?

Not seen Nobby since he jacked the fight game in. One of the great characters, always messing about on the scales and every card girls nightmare as he was a bit careless with the sponge. Had a drink with Tony Randall the other week and he's doing a sideline in designing and making bespoke fashion garments on the side!!!!!
