Soliman vs. Sturm on February 2

IBF #1 Sam Soliman will travel to Germany to clash with former WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm on February 2nd for the right to challenge the winner of the Daniel Geale vs. Anthony Mundine fight on January 30 in Sydney, Australia. The IBF have told both Geale and Mundine they must defend against the #1 contender. The IBF have allowed Geale to defend against Mundine, who defeated him via disputed split decision three years ago, instead of IBF #1 Soliman. “The stakes are incredibly high as is the challenge,” said Soliman. “I am going to Germany on a mission, to beat Sturm. I have no control over what happens in the Mundine and Geale fight.” Soliman and Sturm have boxed a common opponent in Giovanni Lorenzo, whom they both defeated over twelve rounds. Soliman did it in 2012. Sturm won in 2010.

seems a bit harsh. sam had to fight 2 fights to get to #1, and now he has to travel to the #3's back yard to defend that position, while geale gets to fight the big money fight against a mandatory. now im not picking on geale for taking the cash at all. just think its a bit harsh on sam.

It would bring Sturm's collar size in a centimetre or so if a second Australian born fighter beats him!

interesting choice. a good choice of fight after he got geale, but before and with the title shot on the line??
hope he's getting paid well.

At Sam's age it is a matter of socking away as much prizemoney as possible while it is still available.

i agree brute, but do you think he'll get more for a title eliminator in germany, or for a title bout with geale here??
why not approach grange promotions about being main support for the geale/mundine bout?
then you could pull a "storm the ring" type scenario, like waters did for mundine a few yrs ago. seemed to work for him, and he didnt really do anything to deserve that payday...

I don't think there would be enough money here for both Geale-Mundine and Soloman-Sturm, at the sort of money they'd be getting in Germany, on the same card, big red, and even if there was Mundine wouldn't spend it.

I was aiming more at Sam having more of a keep busy fight, as opposed to fighting a guy like sturm. He has earnt his number 1 ranking through tough fights, why risk your shot?

Sturm is a big draw in Germany. I'd be surprised if Soliman, who is unlikely to win either bout, collected a larger purse for boxing Geale.
http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sp ... 29j28.html
"Veteran boxer Sam Soliman has received a lucrative but risky birthday present which could jeopardise his chances of fighting a fellow Australian for the IBF middleweight title."
"Stanley confirmed it would be one of the most lucrative purses of Soliman's career and recognised they were risking his mandatory entitlement by fighting Sturm."
"Sam is a professional boxer as well, so it's a good fight in terms of good prizemoney for Sam"

if he is getting paid better than a fight with geale/mundine winner than i have no problem. just seems a bit odd to me otherwise

It's an IBF elimination fight. Should be a good payday for Sam.

Sturm is his own promoter for this fight. Sam had better go for the KO.

did Sturm promote the Geale bout ?? I think Sam can hit and not get hit as well as Geale. Although his hands may not have the pop Daniel's do, if he isnt hit it will be hard to give it against him....what did I just say !! The fights in Germany. ANything can happen!!

Sturm has a great jab, Yet I cant see it having any affect on Soliman at all. There is no way you can keep a fighter like Soliman at bay with a jab.

Thats what i am saying. Sturm promoted the Geale fight and Geale got a decision so its not outta the question. Will be interesting to see whcih judges get the nod for this one. And further I have spoken with Mainevent, they are in negotiations with the distributor and hope to have an announcement early in the new year.

Sam has always fought in people's backyard, and he is definetly earning more 4 this german fight, than he'd get fighting Geale! But Geale has something worth more than the money!! The Belt!! But good luck to Sam for taking up the challenge, it's the aussie thing to do!! They could of put in a half baked " thai" or wotever to keep him " active", but thats not him!!
