Mogens Palle, the legendary Danish promoter, is 70 today (Sunday). The man who steered Ayub Kalule and Jimmy Bredahl to huge paydays against Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar de la Hoya respectively, is still going strong.
On Saturday, he staged Johnny Bredahl's successful WBA bantamweight title defence against Japan's Nobuaki Naka.

Whatever happened to Eyup Can, Freiheit? He absolutely trounced Pat Clinton in a European title fight in 1989 and looked on the verge of something special. Then I read he had lost interest in the sport and we never saw him again. Is that true?

Your dad's right. Palle is an excellent promoter and has delivered the big fights for his fighters to prove his muscle in the boxing world. He brought Carlos Monzon over to fight Tom Bogs and lured WBA light-middleweight champion Masashi Kudo out of Japan for Ayub Kalule, for examples. He also resurrected the career of Jorgen Hansen when Hansen scored a stunning three-round knockout over our own Dave "Boy" Green, when Green was still dangerous (before Leonard finished with him in other words). I'm only surprised that British fighters haven't queued up to sign with him. Denmark ain't that far away. A fading Ken Buchanan signed with him in the late 70's and almost got a shot at Jim Watt's WBC lightweight title (Ken lost a horrible decision to Charlie Nash and Nash got the shot instead). The opportunities across the Channel are endless for those British fighters with real ambition. How far is Germany? An hour on the plane. And German promoters carry the real clout in Europe today. Yet many British fighters stay here and languish.

Plenty of skill - but no power!

Danish/turkish Eyup Can had 100 amateur fights, and already as a 20 year old, he competed in the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles, where he captured a bronze medal. He was defeated inthe semi finals by eventual champion Steve McCrory.

At this early point, talks about a professional career had already surfaced, but Can's young age prevented the idea. Instead he served in the military back in Turkey, and competed in the World championships in Reno, USA in 1986. Once again he got a bronze medal!

After this, he turned pro with promoter Mogens Palle, but something quickly became clear; Can could outwork the best of them, but he seriously lacked punching power! All his professional fights went the distance, and word is he never, ever, even floored an opponent. Pro or amateur!

In one fight he actually didn't manage to "out work" his opponent. In 1988 he lost an eight round decision to tough American Joey Olivo, but wasn't discouraged by it at all. The following year, he won the vacant European flyweight championship, decisioning Scotlands Pat Clinton.

Eyup started out slowly, and Clinton got so courageous that he stuck out his chin, as if to say that he wasnt worried about his opponent. He should never have done that, as Can turned on his turbo, and beat Clinton to a pulp in the remaining eleven rounds.

Can turned out to be one of the few who got away with defending a title in Italy. In a hard fourght encounter, he got a split nod over Giampera Pinna, in Cefalu in 1989. After this nothing really happened in the career of Eyup Can!

It is quite a mystery what caused his disappearance from the ring, and only rumuors speculate the reason. He attempted a comeback in 1992, and won two six round decisions, before he again drifted away from the sport. Maybe his heart wasn't in it any longer?
