Anyone else suprised how much coverage macho camachos death has garnered in the mainstream media and print press? I have seen broadsheet stories with photos (not sports section articles) in the guardian, independant, Times and Telegraph.

Camacho is not a true all time great, rather a all time great talent wasted but still a little suprised.....his trip to these shores as a strutting 24 year old in 1987 was something to remember...u can see how it influenced Naseem Hamed to ape his look and act to a point of obsession!

Think the manner he was killed and the keeping him"alive" till his kids could see him
may have helped make it news worthy.

I read somewhere his friend had 9 big bags of coke on him or something similar.

I was really surprised as well.

Telegraph wrote a pretty good obit on Camacho and were pretty quick in putting them in compariosn to Manny Steward's and Gatti's obits.

I for one am pleased his passing got the attention it deserved , drugs and domestic violence occupy the rap sheet of many retired boxers it shouldn't take anything away from ring achievements IMO

Exactly, we'll said mike Tyson = rapist Floyd mayweather = wife beater Etc etc. the list is endless, but because majority of fight fans personally like them then it's ok well it's not, but there all human and make mistakes, what they do away from the ring may not be good but they should be remembered for there achievements inside the ring. I'm surprised Mugabi wrote that he didn't really think he was great, this is a fighter who knocked out the great sugar ray Leonard, beat Duran twice, had a 30yr, 88 fight career only losing 6 and never being stopped, his 6 loses came at the hands of Felix Trinidad, Oscar dela Hoya etc etc, only the young greats. he won 3 world titles in 4 weight divisions, fought from super-feather through to super-middle, not bad I personally think for a 5ft 6" fighter who you class has not great

When remembering Camacho I don't really rate his wins over Leonard and Duran, Leonard was 40 and hadn't fought in 6 years, Duran was 45 in their first meeting and 50 in their second.

NO people forget that Camacho was a big name with his act and all the rest of the stuff out of the ring in the 80's and 90's

good look back on his fight with Rosairio here, both boxers have now died in tragic ways.

But he was hardly a big name in the UK.....

I read somewhere that, when Rosario caught Camacho it affected him for the rest of his career, making him less attacking.

Is this true?

He certainly didn't fight on the inside so much after the Rosairio fight, less macho.

Its certainly one of those things thats been repeated by journalists so much that its been taken as fact. I dont really buy it. I just think as he moved up the weights he came across guys who were stronger more able to take his own punch. Guys like Paz, Mancini,Haughan were nobodys patsies, and Davis up until the Mcgirt fight wasnt exactly someone he should have been expected to just disrespect and go in there and take out.Macho wasnt as much of a puncher as at the lighter weights i think thats a factor too

Anyone here how tactfully Steve Bunce reported Camacho's death - not exactly "he's brown bread" but it was pretty blunt.

It was something like "well the Macho man is no more, he is dead".

Fair play though, it was a nice tribute after and I thought Steve more than made up for his rather blunt approach when talking about after.

I know there has been much debate about whether he is a hall of famer or not on the current. For me, if we are not taking into account his personal problems and his other issues outside of boxing - in the ring, as a combination of his skills, achievement and charisma - then he most certainly is a Hall of Famer. Even though he probably could have and should have done more.

The sad thing is, they are only covering him for his lifestyle and way he died, rather than his boxing career. If he was a boxer who became an average Joe in his retirment and died in his sleep they wouldn't give a shit. But stuff like this sells. Shame.

I think you misread that mate, he said 'big bags' not 'bin bags' although you are correct, 9 bin bags of coke would be a MONUMENTAL haul!
