bit of an ongoing debate this one, Farnell had a huge following....as did Ricky Hatton, so was it the chicken or the egg?... did Rickys fans latch on to Farnell or vice versa?.... who had the biggest core of supporters? good promoting to put these fellas (and gomez) on bills together, made them follow the fights of each other and fill venues and line pockets. but who ORIGINALLY had the bigger fanbase, and why?

My recollections of those days are that there weren't two distinct camps - the fans followed them both / all - Gomez included.

Yes and no Twenty Six. They did all support each other pretty much, but each man had a core of followers. Arnie's dad knew a lot of people, as did Ricky's, and they respectively helped their lads shift boat loads of personal tickets.

I was around in those days mate and assumed the supporters rooted for all of em.
Ryan Ricky Anthony and Mikey often found themselves on the same bills.

Yeah, like I said, they did root for each other. All I'm saying is that Arnie would get a batch of tickets from Frank that his dad and him would shift to their connections (his core of followers who went, in the first instance, to watch him and would've done even if there was nobody else on the card), and Ricky and his dad would do the same, and, likewise, Gomez would sell his tickets on. I don't know who shifted more personal tickets in the early days, though.

I was around in those days, too, and think if both fought on seperatre bills, Farnell had much the bigger support. When Ricky boxed on Ryan vs Matthews undercard, there cant have been more than a couple of hundred there for him. I think Ricky converted a lot of the fans when they saw how good and exciting (yes, really!) he was.

I remember that time when farnell hijacked hattons fight when blue moon came on & farnell bared his ass like a scene from grease!! For a minute they was singing there's only one, until they realised it was farnell with that give away tattoo on his bum

My recollection is that two separate fan bases from either side of Manchester eventually merged into one as they were virtually always on the same bill. Those were good days for boxing fans in Manchester.

I do remember either a hatton or farnell fan on sky one time saying there man would become a world champion & is the deal.there was two seperate supports on this certain show & I didn't understand it as there was 2 weight classes between them? I know farnell is a big united fan, but both from Salford & there seemed hostility between there support at that time with both wanting to claim bragging rights

Arnie is from Failsworth and Rick is from Hyde (although born in Stockport). Neither is from Salford. That's Moorsey's patch.

I think Jamie Moore is from Salford. Hatton is from Hattersley, Arnie is from Failsworth.
