My recollection of Roy's career is that he was constantly criticised for fighting people who had no hope, and not going after the big fights (this was after the purple period where he fought Toney and McCallum etc)

Mcallum was shocking by the time Jones fought him... That was not a decent win.

Jones had a couple of decent wins and then ran off with his HBO contract to fight nobodies...whilst juicing. His career, when you consider he was supposed to be the sport's main man, was a joke.

Best sporting moment in the last 25 years was when the very average Tarver sparked him out.

It removes no doubt as they never fought. Nardiello beat Malinga but that does not make him any better than those three, does it? Jones was excellent, but unfortunately probably juicing his whole career.

Jones was incredible to watch but get rid of Toney and his record is pretty bare, infact it's almost Calzaghe-esque, Hopkins and McCallum don't count as nobody knew who Hopkins was back then and McCallum was a fossil.

I reckon he would have beaten all those super-middleweight names he didn't face anyway but he was a stay at home joe making easy money against knockover opposition.

He was like a boxing version of the Globetrotters.

That's what he used to do-play basketball then fight. A couple of times i remember anyway.

and eubanks wanted millions for a fight he hadnt really earned.
He never fought julian jackson as he had been wrecked twice by mclellan. and collins also retired prematurely just when a matchup might have happened.

But in the same timespan Jones jnr did fight toney, mccallum, hopkins,johnson,malinga and others.

Saying fights like these didnt happen because of Roy is silly.

Can't agree with you on Hopkins. I knew who he was, though I didn't know what he would become. The fact that Jones didn't know he was signing to fight another future hall of famer doesn't discount that victory at all in my view. McCallum, you're right. I had misremembered, and thought that fight took place straight after McCallum's war with Toney, (which was already a past prime McCallum, but still a great fight) not 4 years later.

Perhaps it doesn't remove doubt for you mate, but it certainly does for me. When he won the IBF super middleweight title, his victory was lorded as the biggest whupping in 20 years by Ring Magazine of a dominating champion.

RJJ went straight in with a 46-0 James Toney who was flying high in the pound for pound lists at the time.

He wiped the floor with him, danced rings around him and sent him to the canvas. He was masterful.

I even recall an interview with Eubank and he was very frank saying the reason he never fought Jones was he would have been beaten up. Although he since come out with other bollocks to the contrary.

That doesn't mean he weren't the best around at that weight and for a long time. Collins was a good solid and honest fighter; he ought to be honset enough to admt he retired rather than get leathered by Joe Calzaghe. Jones, around that time would have hammered Steve and not in a pretty way.

I agree. But the fact is, we will never know.

Jones went steady on a past his best McCallum; if he'd have gone full he'd have given Mike a lot of pain.

Collins gave up his WBO title rather than face his number 1 contender Calzaghe,he fiend injury as an excuse not to carry on to face Calzaghe ,after a about 6 months when Calzaghe was champion Collins said he was gonna come back as a cruiser weight ...these are facts ,i remember it like yesterday

Indeed the man who beat the man who beat the man.

My recollection is that Collins retired because he couldn't get the Jones fight, and he didn't feel there was anyone else out there worth fighting at that stage of his career.

The Calzaghe fight was high risk/low reward, as JC was the young up-and-comer and Collins was the established champion who was only looking for the massive fights. Much like the Calzaghe-Froch scenario a few years later.
