middleweight gumbs had a very strange career. his early fights were a mixed bag of plenty of defeats and the occasional win..then something happens!! in his middle years he starts to pick up win after win after win. becomes commonwealth champion and then starts to go backwards again. i didnt follow roys career particularly closely and my info is because of his boxrec career record. but in the real world, what turned gumbs into a contender after such an indifferent start?
