I have spoken to a few journeymen over the years who always seem to have a story to tell about late calls and saving shows it seems to be a thankless task and I do believe the sport would be lost without them .....doesanyone have any interesting / funny stories ?

I have a signed book by Michael Murray, The Journeyman, but to be honest I couldn't get into it.

A collection of journeymen stories would be great book in it's own right.

Anyone read Tony Booth's Boxing Booth? I saw the documentary Sky did following him around, "I Could Have Been a Contender" and that was a good watch, he's a funny character.

I went to do a corner months ago.was asked if I could jump in as there was a pull out.train home picked up shorts & boots.got back & boxed half hour later.forgot gum shield.had to borrow a hw spare. Got front tooth knocked out!money I earned had to pay for new railings. Bastard!

I'm a sad little boy- I got recommended a book on here before by old bones ian I think it was 'The alternative view of a boxer's record' by Jim McMillan, it was very good about the Journeymen he match-made for in the North-west.

I read this and thought it was good although if I remember rightly it was only just halfway through his career.

Yes, i have got it. Good book. He is in prison now.

I was at a show in Dudley with some friends and popped into the Saracens Head for a few Jars when on the other side of the Bar was Ernie Smith, alone Pint in hand (sure he was smoking too) so I sent him a pint over and he came over and a had a few pints with us. I asked him if he was there to support his brother Billy or just to watch the boxing. He laughed at me and grinned and said "Im 3rd on"!!!!

Max Maxwell (who I would not regard as a journeyman) once saved a dinner show in Birmingham with 30 minutes notice. The original opponent did not turn up and Max was sitting in an Indian restaurant having his dinner. Jon Pegg gave him a call and he turned up. Max was not in training and the belly was evident but he won against a journeyman

That's a great story. I looked up his record after reading this, didn't realize he was dead, how sad.

I remember Nobby Nobbs being at a show at Stoke with one of his Boxers when the Promotor said that the opponent for a big ticket seller had just pulled out this was at about 7-45 pm so straight away Nobby Phoned Peter Buckley who came straight over from Birmingham and was in the ring at about 9-15 to face the ticket seller and obviously Peter gave his usual performance and lost on points What characters Nobby and his Boxers were saved no end of shows on the night

I'd been at the gym earlier in the day.8 hard rounds with Ryan Taylor.got home.quick kip.got up. Just dossing.opened another can & got a call about 3 o'clock. Was in the excel ring on khan undercard at about 6.

Ah cleethorps. The boys there were giving me proper gip.only fair I chucked a few wanker shuffles about.to be fair most of my stories I can't really talk about till I knock it on the head

Didn't the Murray book describe rounds against Mavrovic that didn't actually happen? (He got stopped a lot earlier whilst the round descriptions go up to about eight or nine?)
