I worked on this film last year, and in all due fairness I have to say............it's SHIT!!!!!

To be honest, It's starts out well - the manager is spot on - but they ran out of money

Worked on it? Looked pretty average but I thought I'd post it being a boxing film and all.

Yes I posted a thread a year or so ago on another forum, asking if anyone wanted to be in the film - crown scene at Stanstead airport, as the champ arrives in the UK.

Anyway, just thought I'd be honest as to the quality of the film....

It looks like most of the main actors from the LOTR trilogy have decided to make a few crappy movies, just for a change of pace:

- The hunky Viggo Mortensen in the crappy remake western (more arab than western, really, but it's like, a cowboy ridin' the ranges of ol' Arabee, which is a twist that makes it way cool, right?) Hidalgo. Now, if you want to see a cool Viggo movie, check out The Indian Runner, written & directed by Sean Penn. The scene where Viggo spits the peas in that one is a classic of the psycho cinema. ;)

- The willowy-but-in-a-hunky-way Orlando Bloom in the crappy pugilistic movie The Calcium Kid - make sure and drink plenty of milk, now, kiddies, or the ghost of Ezzard Charles will sneak up on you and box your ears off! Actually, the total lameness of this flick is perfectly captured by the official blurb from the IMDB page:

"Plot Outline: The film is a mockumentary comedy, in which Bloom plays young milkman Jimmy. He is an amateur boxer who by a bizarre twist of events ends up fighting the world champion in his home town. "

- The lovely Liv Tyler in the bafflingly complex, visionary Jersey Girl, written & directed by Clerks creator Kevin Smith. This film is so byzantine in its complexity that one is rendered nearly mute in attempting to describe it, and is left muttering inane taglines like

"Tagline: Forget about who you thought you were, and just accept who you are."

Jersey Girl continues the important Hollywood trend of having Ben Affleck star in two-thirds of all movies having "romance" in their descriptive keyword list.

Yeah no idea how they got Bloom in this £1.8 mill film - must've signed up before the LOTR release I guess.

There's so many great boxing stories they could make films out of - I don't think there's ever been a film bio of any of the Mexican greats has there?

Couldn;t they have at least come up with a cooler-sounding nickname for the lead character in this one? Maybe something like "The Atomic Milkman."

Have they ever made a boxing movie with realistic fight scenes? I've certainly never seen one.

I read recently that he/his team is actually in talks regarding a film of his life.
I think Nigel Benn would be a great subject - army background, early kos, Watson setback, rebuilding in States, classics with Eubank and McClennan, DJing etc - seriously action-packed!

You're right. Trouble is, with boxing being a minority sport these days, movies like this invariably get made into crappy TV movies - The Ray Mancini story springs to mind ( never saw it, but heard it was pretty dire )
Perfect story too - Dad is injured in WW2 and misses his shot at the title. Son eventualy wins it for Dad, 20 years later in a one round war - cue swelling music and end credits.

Tapia's story will probably suffer the same fate.

A lot of the scenes for Calcium were shot down at the Peacock gym BTW.

I did think that when I Bennies post, its the best of the lot easily.
stands alone as the best boxing based film ever in my opinion.

Was a bit dissappointed with Ali when i saw it, far too much political bollox and not enough of the boxing side but still not a bad film.

Raging Bull is a great film, but I wouldn't call the fight scenes realistic by a long shot. LaMotta took some serious punishment in his time, but the beating DeNiro takes in the film would've left him dead in real life.

I think Scorsese called the fight scenes "heightened realism" or something like that

Light Heavy weight champ Eddie Mustafa Muhammad played Billy Fox, the guy LaMotta took a dive against.

has no-one ever seen "The Set Up" made in 1949 and starring Robert Ryan? its a cracking film and the story goes along the lines of..

' Over-the-hill boxer Bill 'Stoker' Thompson insists he can still win, though his sexy wife Julie pleads with him to quit. But his manager Tiny is so confident he will lose, he takes money for a "dive" from tough gambler Little Boy...without bothering to tell Stoker. Tension builds as Stoker hopes to "take" Tiger Nelson, unaware of what will happen to him if he does.'

its based on a peom by William Moncure March who apparently was really fucked off when he foun that on film the main character ie thompson, was white when he had originally written it as him being a black fighter named Pansy Jones

its realistic in as much as the main star, ryan, was a boxing champion while a student at Dartmouth college.


its shot in real time and lasts about an hour and a half. its an absolute cracker. sad though. but id serioulsy recommend it. i mean any film with the line,

Stoker: Yeah, top spot. And I'm just one punch away.

Julie: I remember the first time you told me that. You were just one punch away from the title shot then. Don't you see, Bill, you'll always be just one punch away...

deserves a recommendation! ive got it on tape and havent watched it in a while. i think ill dig it out!
