in the UK for some fucked up reason they never fill us in on purses.

i would be interested in knowing what audley got paid for his 1st big fight, v hersia the other night.

what kinda payday does danny williams recieve for his fights, as their always on the same basic level?

any ideas?

It's one of the biggest mysteries in boxing.

In America, everything is transparent and fighters purses are announced all the time, why is it over here that is is almost never publicised? I think boxing managers/promoters are much more guarded over here about revealing what fighters get paid...

well if he is promoting himself he will earn money for the fight (over £100k) plus A Force will earn on the show....

wasnt he on a £100k per fight for his first 10 with the Beeb, cannot see him being on less now....

Yeah, he was, but bear in mind all his expenses will have come out of that, he won't have got more than half of that million I reckon by the time all the other costs are factored in.

But he's still rich.

Certainly a lot better off than me, that's for sure.

yeah but factor in the sponsorships and appearances and he will be back up to a million....

I thought about that, but Cantor sport aren't the biggest sponsors in the world....

Ok John, fair enough, perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, but surely you would agree that fighters purses are more in the public domain than they are here?

I assume it is a cultural thing more than anything else.

In the US, the promoter of a fight agrees sum A with the promoter/agent of the boxer/opponent. The promoter/agent of the boxer/opponent agrees sum B with the manger of the boxer/opponent. The manger of the boxer/opponent agrees sum C with the boxer/opponent. Sum X - Q / J * (+ 1/2 the pull of the moon) is notified to the commission.

Well yes, you have a point, announced and actual purses are two different things of course, as Pacquaio's case recently illustrated.

However, why do you think it is that people are generally loathe to report purses unless it is a purse bid and they have no choice in this country, do you think most promoters figure it's not really anyone's business? I suppose you could make an argument for that, and also that American razzamatazz makes people feel compelled to announce huge purses to lend an air of the grandiose to the event....

Simply because it's confidential information, the promoter doesn't want the TV company knowing, the manager doesn't want the boxer knowing, the boxer doesn't want his wife knowing etc.

That's what I figured, especially with regard to a promoter and their fighters I would dare say, otherwise too much cause for jealousy and demands for bigger pay packets.

I do think it's largely a cultural thing.

I agree with you that of course everything is not as it seems in America, but most boxing writers in America seem to have a pretty fair idea of what goes on, I couldn't say the same myself.

Do the British boxing board have to be informed of all payments made with regard to the fight?

As a non-boxing aside, my best mate's Dad was a manager at Greenock docks in the 1970s. The lads wanted "embarassment money" for unloading toilet seats and threatened to go on strike if they didn't get it.

Jimmy (my mate's Dad) told them they were more than welcome to go on strike but if they did he would take an advert in the local Greenock rag listing each man's weekly wage.

Strike averted.
