Magistrates decided "enough was enough" and got tough with boxer Herbie Hide yesterday by convicting him in his absence of three motoring offences.
The 32-year-old former WBO heavyweight champion failed to appear for trial at Norwich Magistrates' Court but the Bench went ahead without him after hearing the case had been adjourned four times since January.
On each occasion, Hide had been given more time by the court to provide documents, but he had still not done so, prosecutor Martin Ivory said.
"My application is that enough is enough," he added.
Hide now faces a probable driving ban and will be sentenced next month.
He was charged with driving a Fiat Punto on the A140 at Dunston on May 15 last year with no insurance, and driving a Bentley with no insurance and no MoT on Gas Hill, in Norwich, on June 18.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges at an earlier hearing.
Hide's solicitor, Ian Fisher, told the Bench he did not know why his client had failed to appear and the case then went ahead with no further representation from him.
Mr Ivory told the court that Hide, driving a Bentley at 4.30am on June 18, had been stopped by a PC Thrussel and asked to produce his driving licence, insurance and test certificates. He had not been able to do so but elected to produce them at Bethel Street police station within seven days.
He failed to do so, though a charge of driving with no licence was later withdrawn after police gained a print-out of this document.
On May 15, Hide had been stopped by PC Richard Still while driving a Fiat Punto on the A140 at Dunston at 11.25am. He was unable to produce an insurance certificate.
Magistrates' chairman Robert Price found all charges against Hide proven and issued a warrant with bail for the boxer to appear in court on April 8 for sentencing. He said Hide was "a person with a likelihood of getting a driving ban".
The convictions come after Hide narrowly escaped a suspension of his boxing licence after being fined earlier this year for carrying a 10in knife outside a nightclub.
He was effectively let off with a last chance as to his future behaviour. Last June he was fined £500 and ordered to pay £300 in costs after being involved in a ringside disturbance.

Hide must be saying to himself
"I must be the unluckiest fighter ou there. I win a World title and nobody cares because I was always in Bruno and Lewis' shadow. I mean driving without an MOT or insurance, it can happen to anyone and they catch me."

The Punto was a courtesy car supplied by Hennessy promotions.

must say tho although I cant stand Hide I took no pleasure from his mental capitulation in front of a national tv audience, totally unnecesary of the bbc to show that on a delayed broadcast and doesnt do boxing any favours.

As trivial as these offences first appear, what is a highly-paid boxer doing driving around without insurance! What if he was to run over a child! Then not even to bother turning up at court FOUR times shows complete disdain for the law. Herbie will carry on driving after his driving ban next month and will then find himself in serious trouble. Driving while disqualified gets you sent down. The Board ought to save face now and pull his licence. If they don't, they're going to be embarrassed.

Well I don't know, i guess it added to the Drama of the event, I guess Herbie could have demanded they don't show it, as it wasn't a part of the fight.

I think the guy was trying to console him to be fair, he kept saying 'but herbie the fight will still happen.'

It was disturbing how mentally frail Herbie is, that rambling stuff about his kid brother and stuff, Herbie doesn't seem to be of the soundest of mental foundations.

I was saddened to see Hide talking about beating Williams then Sprott then retiring. Herbie had always claimed to be one of the worlds best but now it seems even he has had to finally admit to how far his capabilities can carry him.

I'd like to see him hang them up to be honest. He's too vulnerable for this game.

most definitely mate, but we know this I suppose, its well known he is a psycho, just dunno didnt seem right to me. This guy breaking down in fornt of tv cameras like that, I almost felt sorry for him, but ended feeling pity.
he certainly is a pitiful individual in more ways than one.

I'm not sure if Herbie has ever really got over the death of his young brother several years ago. It's a sad tale. He clearly has no meaning in life. But to continually involve himself in shameful incidents is not the answer. I feel he needs counselling. But only he can help himself.

that a very compassionate and good viewpoint, the problem being he is not stable, and how many other peoples lives are gonna get wrecked or impacted on for the sake of one individuals lack of control. Life by its nature will give many people tragic circumstances to endure and get over, most dont feel the need to go off the rails for the rest of their lives, carrying knifes and traffic breaches are only the surface.
well anyway hopefully he can get some kind of help and sorts himself out.

I believe he's now a senior at 18 years old.
Along with Amir Khan, O'Donnell was considered one of the very best juniors around last season.
He's also rumoured to have spent some time with Johnny Eames who trains O'Donnell's former clubmate, Lee Beavis.

I think without the money he got from boxing Hide would be in a nuthouse by now.
