Antonio Margarito will vacate the WBO welterweight title and move up to the 154-pound division in search of greener pastures. Margarito made the announcement on his website, saying, "bigger fights lay ahead of me." Although Margarito does not have anything scheduled, he hopes to make his junior middleweight debut early this summer. Besides undisputed champion Winky Wright, there are at least two other big money fights that are possible: Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. There are fewer big names at welterweight and a bout against the biggest names in that weight class, generally-recognized world champion Cory Spinks and Ricardo Mayorga, are less likely because Margarito is promoted by Bob Arum while Spinks and Mayorga are under contract to rival Don King. Margarito won the vacant WBO belt in 2002 by defeating Antonio Diaz. Margarito is following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Daniel Santos, who also vacted the same title in order to move up to 154.

Could be a real threat at 154. This guy is a "who needs him!".

Yeah the grass is definately greener up at Light Middleweight although i am a tad disappointed some of the better matches at Welterweight were not made involving Margarito...especially Margarito-Mayorga.

Ahh bugger it. Margarito versus Mayorga was one of the top 3 matches I was most looking forward too.

Yeah that fight would have been great to see.

Yeah i would have initially picked Margarito because of his all action punching style but he could also be hit himself and occasionally hurt so Mayorga's power could have told, still we will probably never know unless Mayorga moves up as well which is not inconceivable.

Mayorga was going to go up in weight to fight Mosley so i don't see why he can't, though maybe the incentive isn't there because Margarito isn't a big name but it would be a cracking fight.

Yeah what is Magaritos chin like??? I have no idea. Anyone out there know ?

Really rate Magarito and feel he could beat a lot of rated fighters, but he would try and go toe to toe with Mayorga and I don't think anyone at welter or light middle could get away with that. Throw Vargas in as well though, maybe Trinadad if he comes back at light middle, and you have some cracking fights.

no doubt one of warrens welters will take this belt and defend against nonames for a half-a decade or so-barnes - who is already ranked in the wbo top ten with wins ober only domestic oppo, mike jennings or even sinclair now that the wbo is vacant
