What do people consider "Chinny" to be?

People use the term in many different ways, i myself even use it in different contexts. But what do people consider chinny to actually mean?

Is it like Haye where he can be dropped fairly easily when caught but recovers almost instantly, or is not being able to recover from a shot, or not being able to take a shot in the head region at all?

Price is the definition of chinny, not being able to take a shot at all. It was the first time I have seen him hit cleanly in a pro fight.

What about the guy that hit him after the break in an early pro fight? Had him all over the shop with the wobbly leg dance.

No, the first would be vulnerable. We don't have a catchy colloquialism for that in boxing.

Partly the second two. But...

I cannot believe we're having this fvcking pedantic stupid semantic argument. Chinny is a colloquialism FFS. It has no "proper" definition. Yet what it implies to the informed is that the dude in question is more vulnerable than one would expect to head-shots. Again, to the informed, one would consider it obvious what the term implies. If a guy keeps getting up, he's not fvcking chinny, by definition. Easy to floor, but if you look up "chinned" in the dictionary it's a colloquialism implying being knocked out.

Therefore chinny is the derivative form & implies that someone is generally more vulnerable to being knocked out than average.

If the term offends you, mentally substitute "vulnerable to a head-shot" whenever you see it.

I really cannot see the problem with this word. If I write that someone's a devastating puncher, d'you really fvcking need to nit-pick over exactly what "devastating" implies, & then give examples? Or can one use one's common fvcking sense?

Sorry, I forgot, it's the Internet.

If I said Muhammed Ali was Muhammed Ali, I'd get sixteen fvckwits going "Yeah but...".

Forget I spoke.

Actually the inestimable Mighty Warrior is less annoyed by pedants than I & made a stirring stab at it on another thread, quoted here:-
MightyWarrior wrote:Chin shots, temple shots, it doesn't really matter - you either hold a shot well, or you don't.
( you don't see fighters with good chins react like that from temple shots ) and like 90% of big punchers, Price doesn't.

The bit where datsue answered your question even though he despises himself for doing so is right. Someone considerably more vulnerable to head shots than the average boxer would be.

price is a carbon copy of Enzo Maccarinelli powerful puncher but can't take out what he dishes out. Best thing for price is to quickly come back in 3-4 months win and call it a freak punch one off. get hyped up again by his team but in reality he will probably get caught be a nothing punch again.

you say that Datsue but the number of people saying people arent chinny because they werent hit on the chin and it was a head shot etc has me wondering. Jim Watts saying Khan hasnt got a chin problem because he was hit in the neck, bunce saying price hasnt been shown to be chinny because it was an ear shot.

I would personally still consider Haye to be chinny. The difference is he recovers where as guys like khan are chinny but cant recover regardless of where on the head they were hit.

Well then they're being stupid.

Chinned means "knocked out".

Being chinned means "to be knocked out".

Chinny is the derivative, therefore it means "likely to be knocked out".

It's not a boxing thing, it's an English language thing. I can't be bothered to phone up Buncey & explain about etymology to him, maybe you can?

ok post the definition of Chinny or Chinned from either the oxford or cambridge dictionaries. Also chin in the oxford dictionary is -
1 informal hit or punch (someone) on the chin: he looked about ready to chin someone

I think you're being a bit anal on this occasion - there isnt real definition of chinny as far as im aware which makes it subjective. Which is why i asked the question.

Thats my point, i would still consider the inability to take any head shot "Chinny".

I don't consider Haye chinny otherwise he would've been KOd by now. He was stopped by Thompson for being tired and not able to defend himself. He took Wlad's beat shots pretty much unscaved. Froch was floored by Taylor, Calzaghe a few times and Hatton prior to Mayweather used to block punches with his face so them getting floored is not being chinny, noone can take EVERY shot. I would even go as far as saying when Harrison was been KOd it's always by heavyweight BOMBS

but the likes of khan and price can be floored by grazing shots to the ear and look like a jab can put them down... That's chinny to me

Hilarious, you're taking people to task for using a word that 90 % of non-fvckwits without a vested interest in meedja nit-picking would agree with, & I'm anal?

Wonderful.

Also: if you're asking a subjective question, why is it not okay to disagree with you? Or is it just subjective as long as you're right?

PS: Dan's got it right. :TU:

How am i taking anyone to task i was asking a question? you were taking people to task for not knowing the english language when watts and bunce were using it in the correct context by the looks of it. You're now saying those people are nit pickers.

Chinned isnt only used to mean KO'd its like a regional dialect, it means smacked in the mouth where im from. I have however i have heard it used to describe being sparked on many occasions.

I didnt say i agreed with watts and Bunce i stated the opposite i consider it someone who struggles to take a head shot, i also didnt state my opinion was correct. Have you missed your morning coffee or something today?

I react strangely & unpredictably to pedantry, especially when it's nonsense pedantry.

If someone on the TV said the sky was yellow, would you immediately agree?

& also, does one have to have a giant alarm clock fall on one's head before we employ the term "clocked"? Or does that "mean different things to different people"?

I apologise if I seem dry or whatever, but as slippery as language is--& that's one of the fundamentals of it, its contingency & ambiguity--there are concrete definitions for things.

A fighter collapsing from a love-tap to the ear--a fighter who has as a professional has absorbed precisely feck-all of any note beforehand & therefore has no previous rep for durability, having shown none--from a sharp not concussive puncher, a fighter who was wiped out by a midget Canadian, battered by a small Italian & pole-axed by Fury with the headguard on...

Obviously not chinny. Right.

PS: Watch the first Wlad fight. Thompson nails him coming in full-bore with the left, as hard as THompson could hit him, five years ago when he could still get his legs under him to throw it with a bit of snap. Wladdy is jolted & hurt, but stays remarkably upright & doesn't do that strange Angus Young-legs-bicycling in the air thing Pricey was doing last night. Wlad is vulnerable to a hard punch.

Price is chinny.

Okay.

difference is "clocked" is in the english dictionary, "chinny" isnt; to "chin" someone is and it means a blow to the chin. Chinny is a term used in different ways by different people. I dont see what your issue was.

To be fair, I have seen someone go down to a punch to the ear about twice in all the years
I have been watching boxing. It is a very rare occurrence to get halted on a shot like that.

I've seen it happen from an accumulation of shots like barker v martinez but not a soft hit like Price took.

"Chinny" is someone with less than average beard. Price appears to have no beard, therefore he has little to no chin whatsoever.

indeed, but the shot didn't even look all that 'clean'. Shame for big Pricey, with a solid beard he'd be the finished article, but still, offensively he's excellent, and now probably more exciting now we know at the higher levels of the pro game HW's he can be KO'd at any moment (and deliver a KO himself at any moment).
