On the scorecards the epic 15 round battle between hagler and duran fell to the last two rounds which decided it.
Suppose history had been different and Duran had won the last 2 rounds with a similar effort to round 12 and won the fight becoming the first man to win world titles at 4 weights.
Its hard to imagine in any way Duran just retiring after that.
Undoubtedly the Hearns fight would have been bigger bucks with a defeat at the end of it. A Hagler rematch would have been big bucks too and hell SRL would likely have cashed in a 3rd fight in 84 not 89.
So its pretty easy to see how on such a high after beating Hagler, Duran would probably get fat again cash in and lose any of the above fights. There is a chance he would be motivated in a 3rd SRL fight in 84 but equally perhaps not
The question is this..........irrespective of how ignominious Durans career trajectory might continue
a) how much higher would his stock as an ATG be for beating Hagler.
b) how much higher would it be in the extremely unlikely event after beating Hagler Duran retired
c) If he beat Hagler and than SRL rushed in to fight him at 160, jumping over hagler and hearns, in 84 and Duran was in his best shape mentally and physically and beat a rusty SRL and retired.......how much higher would the mystique of Duran be in the ATG list?
