that Hearns landed on Duran, what would be the result?

Lights out? Would Marvelous go down but beat the count?

(exact same shot, same position, etc)


p.s. I posted this same question one time on another forum and many felt that Hagler would not even go down. I find this hard to believe.

I think Hagler wouldve just frowned and went hard at Hearns

Same reaction I got at the other place.

I think Hagler goes down for at least a few seconds.

He eats it and keeps charging forward, not likely that Tommy could land the shot with the same kinda force on Marvin as he did on Roberto anyway.

I thought the punch had perfect timing and was just the right length to get the maximum force from Tommy's build.

Stockier fighters like Marciano would have been more devastating with a shorter punch, such as the one the Rock laid on Walcott.

He'd probably never land that one twice on Roberto...but once is all he needed.......but I do think it would have stunned Marvin.

But then Marvin would get annoyed. Just like he did in the fight they actually waged.

Same outcome.....probably another broken hand for Hearns as well.

Hagler would be hurt for a second but recover just like he did in the actual fight. And If Hearns did hit Hagler with that shot, I'd bet more on Hearns breaking his hand just like he did in the fight.

I think we have to look at the actual fight they did have.
Hearn landed pretty often, and Hagler eyes probably watered a bit.

That exact punch (with Duran) with the Hagler in exactly the same position and feet in same place...maybe a knockdown...Hagler still would have solved the problem though

and Tommy would have gone back to his musical ending
sitting on the stool, strumming on his rubbery legs

loved Hearns, but that night was a bit of bravado too far

Ray Leonard said MMH was like a giant milkdud. He just kept coming and you couldn't hurt him. Tommy might be able to jar Hagler with his best shot, but he would never have been able to put down the Marvelous one. Hearn's best shot in the real fight only made Marvin come back even harder. Hagler was simply the naturally bigger, stronger guy. He was born a middleweight. Maybe the best chin in boxing history.

Irst huge right that stopped marvin dead in his tracks early on likec 30 seconds early on was pretty hellacious in its own right

Duran ate a hell of a lot of right hands before being KO’d. It wasn’t just a shot out of the blue. The right hand that finished him off was devastating but so where the other dozen or more that landed flush.

Could Hagler take one or two? Sure… Could he take a dozen or more? I’m not so sure…

That's true, but Tommy dropped him with the first one he threw.

It's a good hypothetical question, but seeing how Hagler absorbed punches from the bowels of hell from the likes of Mugabi & Hearns himself, I really can't envisage that Hearns could have budged him, even with THAT punch in the same circumstances as Duran.

Hagler had an other worldly chin & fitness to match.

Hearns just isn't putting Hagler down IMO.

IMO, that punch puts anyone down (and, for that matter, Julian Jackson's best shot would have dropped him), but Hagler gets up and fights on. Tommy's only chance would have been to box behind the jab.

I think the shot that decimated Graham would get Hagler's attention--not drop him, but he'd feel it (and then fight harder and KO Jackson like McCallum did).

Jake LaMotta doesn't go down from that shot either.

I'm not seeing that. He'd beat him handily, but Jackson is going to land something that more than stings. A shot like he landed on Herol, which you don't see coming? I reckon that separates anyone from their senses. You know, despite his 12 rounds with McCallum, people think of Herol as chinny because of that one shot, from the hardest punching middleweight in history.
