Khan has used it to make fights, bigger crowds? No idea.

Im just curious. I am well out of the loop and keep hearing about all this twitter stiff, but have yet to see anyone ever make it work as a promotional tool for anything.

I don't think it's made much difference, is boxing more popular/viewed than it was 20 years ago? I'll be surprised if it was.

It can be used to cause a stir or create a fight , from then that fight may get them noticed on tv etc , knock on effect

I think Social Media has been massively under-utilised but then again things like TV promotional work has also been harder to find now a days. With out a doubt Twitter has helped some fights happen.

I know that WWE use it VERY well and I think TV stations are starting to do it (ESPN and Showtime for example) but they still aren't making the most of it.

no boxing isn't more popular. All this twitter stuff does is give fighters more of an oppurtunity to make a fool of themselves in public and that isn't good for boxing.

I think they use it really really badly, actually. They go on and on about twitter followers and trending, but none of that puts bums on seats.

i would go so far as to say their use of social media actually hurts their product.

The strengths of Social Media are its weakness when it comes to promotion.

It's free and everyone has access to it!


Which means that it's used in the most amateurish way and leads to the fighters losing their mystique.

I imagine the crowd at several Tyson Fury fights have been higher than they would be if he wasn't on Twitter.

I am genuinely interested by just how effective it is. If you can sell tickets using it, it's a game changer.

Most people I know, knew him from that big fat gypsy wedding program, not the fact he has a twitter account.

Tyson Fury uses it to get people talking about him. As does Joey Barton in football. It's not actually a bad thing being the villain as it does get you a lot of attention.

UFC stopped the Facebook fights as they were getting less than 1000 viewers for some fights.

I don't know why it is, but fights/events on Facebook just doesn't work at all.

When did the UFC stop the prelims on Facebook?

Must have been quite recently considering the UFC card on the 16th of February was aired on Facebook.

Your original post was making a difference in terms of crowd attendance or TV viewers - not directly that you can draw money from social media.

I bet if you were to go out on a high-street in Britain and ask the question; have you heard of Tyson Fury against have you heard of David Price. The answer would be greater for Tyson Fury. And the majority of that would be from his Twitter rants.
