Interesting part increasing the number of sky dates

His purses were c.£750k over the past couple of years. Even if he's only received half of that what kind of lifestyle does he lead that means that doesn't cover his outgoings??

I'm sure if it's his "lifestyle", working part-time in a sports shop won't exactly cover that!

I'm sure I've read previously that Burns does it only to keep himself level-headed and involved within 'normal' society etc. Certainly not for financial reasons.

It wasn't c.£750k, it was "just approaching £750k". A small but crucial difference. And also that will have been gross, so you'd need to strip out promoter fee, manager fee, co-manager fee, training costs and other expenses.

It's likely that he doesn't *need* to work in the shoe shop to provide for his family, but its also likely that he hasn't made as much money as some would like us to believe.

That's obviously before tax isn't it and he'd be well into the 40% bracket, less management and trainer fees of another 10-15 % EACH.

Absolutely, however, even if it was £700k being 'approaching £750k', £700k - 40% = £420k; £420k - 15% = £357,000. Still two grand a week.

I'm sure I could live on that and I have three kids, and live in one of the most expensive parts of Britain (outside London).

Besides my point was more that it's absolute dog shit journalism to spin it like he's so poor he needs to work in his local Sports Direct...

Those figures are way out. Firstly you've taken tax first, when that comes last after all reasonable deductions. The manager's fee can be anything up to 25 per cent off the gross and the trainer's fee is typically 10 per cent again off the top.

Working on that basis

£700,000 minus 25 per cent (£175,000) and 10 per cent (£70,000) = £455,000. Then take off training expenses, three year's worth of medicals and licence fees, nutritionists, paying sparring partners (which Burns does a lot of) etc. And then take the tax off.

Either way, that's more than I've earned in that time frame and I wouldn't 'need' to take another part-time job to get by.

But then, again, my point was nothing to do with the actual figures and everything to do with shitty journalism.

Be surprised if its Selby only because he's on such a good deal with WSB, GB Boxing and potentially APB funding. I heard that his brother also advised him strongly to stay amateur given the set up. However who knows, Hearn could have set out a big picture.

Selby, is absolute dynamite and will adjust well to pro's and I think given the right build up would go a long way.

Interesting as Hearn has Yafai who was easily outclassed by Selby in the ams.

And how long is a boxer's career ? it's what, 10-12 years so they need to maximise every penny they earn. And what if he lost or a scan retired him prematurely ?

They risk brain damage, bone / tissue damage and not to mention getting their face re-arranged and scarred.

To compare it to factory job or whatever is just plain wrong.

Thats what I thought, in which case, after tax etc, it's not exactly life changing money. Good on him for working on the weekend. Bit of security etc.

I cannot believe Warren has openly stated in interviews something to the effect of "its a tough economic climate, and yeah, so what, a few fighters have been paid late" - can you imagine if he hadn't been paid on time by sky or someone else? Lawsuits all over. He's dreadful sometimes.

Boxing has taken a fascinating turn recently.

If you find contractual renewals and inter promotional Bickering fascinating, that is.

I'm sure I read in an interview with Ricky Burns that he worked in the sports shop as he enjoyed it and liked the people he worked with; I think that Mitchell has used a little poetic license that Burns works weekends to make ends meet. Ricky has been putting bums on seats and delivering strong performances so has earned his money; I'd have thought that he'd have a good nest egg by now and be pretty much set. If he's made over £700,000 for his last 7 bouts he must have made over £800,000 over his career.
