Gary faces 40 year old Portugese Humberto Evora, who's got 3 wins, 10 losses and 2 draws. He hasn't won a professional fight in six years.

The opposition for Cornish is so bad even Bunce gently took the pxss when interviewing Gary on Monday.

I expect to see Cornish blow him away as impressively as Tom Dallas used to do in his heyday, when building his unbeaten streak against similar opponents.

One of the reasons Sky said goodbye to Maloney concerned tumbling latvians but they must be as sick as a parrot when they see this sort of match up on another channel

I'd match him better than this opponent, considering Gary is now 13-0. If I was a supporter of him, or if I was involved in the management side, I would want to see him in against better opposition that a 40 year old loser from Portugal. Other than extending his record to 14-0 I don't see what he'll get from the fight.

No excuses for a match up like this IMO. Although getting paid to hit a heavy bag in the ring is better than hitting one in the gym & not getting paid I guess.
As I have previously stated I have a limited amount of money set aside annually for boxing & when matches like this occur I normally keep my hard earned in my pocket until a good show comes along.

He needs a Daniel Peret type at the moment i think , someone who was always the underdog but gave it a good go and made the prospect have to earn the win and wasnt usually put on his ass

I take the point on wages but the point of this thread was about the development of Cornish as an unbeaten prospect rather than his income. I checked out the opponent on the Boxrec schedule as I'll be tuning into the show tomorrow night and was disappointed at the inept opponent lined up. At this rate Cornish will soon be 20-0 but personally I'd prefer to see him matched against tougher opposition....

I'm assuming he's not going to amount to anything. If they're feeding him fodder like tomorrow night's victim, it looks like a record building exercise on the cheap. Personally I'd like to see Cornish in with someone like Ali Adams or Paul Butlin, where if he was extended he'd learn something, and if he won early, it would mean something (at this level). When the fat old Portuguese loser gets beat tomorrow night it will mean nothing.

I'd prefer every fight to be 50/50 and I'd not think any less of Cornish if he got starched and had to go back to the drawing board. But the evidence suggests that most people would write him off as a bum and stop going to watch him. I agree but while we are never going to get 50/50 match ups (even though the promoters tell us their bills are). This can only be classed as 99/1 match up.

I think Ali Adams might be suspended at the moment, but anyone that would actually put some resistance up would be beneficial.

Tom dallas would be a perfect opponent to test his level

Everybody on this thread is right in their own way. I don't think there is a correct answer as to how Cornish is developed. His manager Tommy Gilmour had repeatedly said that as he had no amateur career , he needs to learn how to be a boxer.
I've seen him several times live - he's got a good right hand, but not as good as someone should have given his size. His left hand is pretty poor. On the rare occasions when he gets hit, he is instantly shocked, but recovers quickly - so far ! I have never seen him pushed back, so don't know how he'd respond under a bit of pressure. I don't know who would be the ideal opponent exactly , just someone who's big, reasonably motivated and who's prepared to push him back!!!

i think when tommy explains that he hasent had much of an amatuer career it kind of says it all and is why he is being developed slowly ... no doubt it will never be quick enough for some but he is very actve, proberly the most active fighter in scotland ??? and this is designed obv to keep him learning ... no one is hyping him in any way and saying hes the next coming of Ali or that, if they were then i would say some of the criticism would be fair ... i look forward to seeing hm develop

I started this thread, with its sarcastic title, after seeing how bad Evora's record was. Ironically, it did turn into a bit of a test for Cornish, he was dropped in the first but was on top by the end. Well done to him for that.

they are going the right way with this guy he is green and needs plenty of experience before mixing it with top ten ranked UK fighters any of whom would beat him at the moment. He has time on his side and is keeping busy which is all he needs to do at this stage.

Hes another Tom Dallas infact Dallas is better,he is a accident waiting to happen...

He needs to fight novices for another 2-3 years because that's what he still is. I would do with Cornish what they do with Deontay Wilder (although noted Wilder's amateur career), put him in journeyman fights and build him very slowly. He's only 25.

Thing is my opinion that is the best thing to do for previous reasons, however reading through the posts it seems that he will just keep getting slated for it as folk think he should be stepping it up after ten fights or whatever ....

Probably won't amount to much, I don't get excited by the heavyweights at all, too many false dawns, too many of them brought up on absolute fodder then tumble when they face their first real test and too many of them just generally out of shape.
