Mike Weaver vs James Toney at heavyweight is an interesting bout.

Toney that beat Holyfield against the Weaver that beat Coetzee.

They come in around the same weight. While Weaver is generally looked at as a crude slugger he had some decent skills. Toney of course was highly skilled but had much less power.

I'm kind of on the fence about this one . I could see it going either way .

Over 12 Toney could edge it by work-rate. Over 15 I think Weaver grinds him down enough to take a close decision. But close fight either way . . Weaver's biggest problem was sleepwalking through many rounds of fights. When he decided to 'wake up' he was a hell of a fighter, well-rounded/schooled although never very slick or tricky.

Toney as a heavyweight stopped Holyfield, seriously outpointed the undefeated Rydell Booker, won a decision over Jameel McCline, etc. He certainly has the tools to decision a Mike Weaver, who was an inconsistant fighter whose main strength was his punching power.

Weaver by decision.

Weaver edges it.

I don't recall Toney ever fighting Jameel McCline, they were scheduled to fight once but it was cancelled. He beat Dominick Guinn and drew with Rahman though.

I'd reluctantly go with Toney on this. I feel my money would be safer.

He was inconsistent, but when he was on Weaver was a very good fighter.

Inconsistent, yes. But even the Weaver who wasn't on fire, say when he fought John Tate, Quick Tillis and Scott LeDoux was a level of power, fitness and stamina beyond any heavyweight James Toney has beaten.

Toney whilst technically very sound beat old men and fatties. Weaver was neither of those and very, very dangerous.
