Norton vs. Zanon, different scoring system

I watched some old Ken Norton fights this weekend, vs. Lorenzo Zanon amongst them. They used a different kind of scoring sytem in that fight than the usual round or 10-point system; winner of the round got 5 points, loser got 4 or less, but the difference was that the results were all added up.
Example: Zanon won the first round on all three judges scorecards (5-4)and was ahead 15-12 going into the second. After round 2, two judges gave the round to Zanon, 5-4 points while one gave Notron 5-4, thus put Zanon in the lead by 29-25.
The major difference in this system is that no judges can be overruled like today where a fighter only needs to get the nod from two of the three judges to win the round. With this system every scorecards are added up and count the same. Isn't this a lot more fair for both fighters? Anyone know why this practice ceased?
